Adams' homer powers Bluejays * * *
Trever Adams belted a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift Creighton past North Dakota State 3-2 on Monday before 203 fans at the CU Sports Complex.
Adams also was credited with a first-inning RBI when second baseman Tanner Adam mishandled a one-out pop fly that allowed Nick Judkins to score from third base. Adams' homer was his fifth of the season and scored Michael Mutcheson, who had doubled. Adams, a senior outfielder out of Lincoln Southeast, leads Creighton in home runs, RBIs (21) and batting average (.372).
Kurt Spomer (1-2) pitched the final 113 innings and struck out two to pick up the win for the Bluejays (17-5).
Zach Wentz (0-4), the last of seven Bison pitchers, was tagged with the loss for North Dakota State (2-16). Wentz moved from third base to the mound for the eighth inning.
Creighton started its normal Friday pitcher Ty Blach, giving him an opportunity to get in some innings after the weekend series with North Dakota was rained out. Blach pitched two shutout innings, allowing a single and no walks while striking out four.
In addition to Adams and Mutcheson, Jimmy Swift and Joey Bowens produced hits for Creighton, which finished with four.
North Dakota State lost its sixth one-run game of the season despite outhitting the Bluejays 8-4. Nick Cowell went 2 for 5 with an RBI, and Tyler Steen was 2 for 4.
Creighton will host the University of Portland in a three-game weekend series at the CU Sports Complex, beginning with a 4 p.m. Friday game. Portland (10-10) will play Washington in Seattle on Tuesday before heading to Omaha.
