Mike Sorensen keeps his eyes open for players good enough to play for the Shockers. He targeted Matuszak as a freshman. Shocker coach Gene Stephenson earned his respect with his work with Logan. Mike Sorensen said his son, who played in the minor leagues from 2004-07, calls Stephenson his best coach.
"My kid was recruited by Arizona, Arizona State, USC and Wichita," Mike Sorensen said. "It absolutely floored me when he decided to go to Wichita. He told me that when he went there and met Gene and (assistant coach) Jim Thomas, it wasn't about them. It was all about him. He believed they would make him the best player he can be."
Matuszak listened. He talked to Logan Sorensen about what it takes to play for Stephenson. He visited WSU three times before choosing the Shockers.
"Wichita was always my No 1 school," Matuszak said. "If you want to do something with baseball, you better go there. They'll make you the best player you can possibly be. That's what I want to be."
