I am not sure I would get so worked up by an irrelevant tweet by a Creighton fan, but the argument illustrates exactly why I hate the term, and wish we would stop using it.
There is no definition of what is a so-called Mid-Major. It is a term coined by ESPN and TV Execs. 20 years ago, there was no mid-major, and it was easier for at-large teams from the Valley, etc to get bids. I think it is more than coincidence that since this term has started getting tossed around, the at-larges seem to be shrinking. All it does is validate the P5 hacks and talking heads for drawing lines in the sand.
Perception is reality. The A-10 doesn't participate in these silly polls and such, and somehow ends up with more at-larges than we do, even though our collective RPI's are competitive most years. In fact, while they get more bids, we of late have done much better with less, having two final four teams in the last five years.
Who cares if Loyola is #4 in the Mid-Major Poll? It is completely meaningless, and does nothing to enhance our credibility. Elgin and the league should follow the A-10, and not allow our coaches to participate in voting in this.
