Beyond the $$$ in your contract, the biggest motivator for the vast majority of coaches is access to the Big Dance. DePaul can be less than Loyola in lots of ways, but as long as it has better access to the NCAA Tourney, it will be more attractive. If Porter thinks he can recruit similar talent to both places , then it's a no brainer.
Except DePaul has never been the fourth best team in the Big East, and there's no reason to think they are the kind of program that is capable of getting to that point.
The issue here isn't the Big East v The Valley in terms of ability to get into the dance. The issue is that DePaul is the wrong Big East program to coach if you want to make the dance.
In the 26 years prior to joining the Valley, Loyola had 4 winning seasons. There was no reason to think that Loyola would be capable of getting to the point of even being competitive in the Valley and many on here (not just WSU fans) were outraged by their addition. They have had 4 winning seasons in the 6 that they have been a part of the Valley. Go figure.
We got lucky with them.
