Your body only allows for so many years to make money playing ball, and his whole journey seems unorthodox (not that that's a bad thing!).
Will be an interesting thing to monitor going forward.
Age is but a number. Deontae Hawkins was the oldest guy on the team most of his time at ISU.... also the least mature.
I was referring to his professional prospects! Not maturity. The NBA (and i assume higher levels of european ball) in particular are going to be more interested in a 19 year old brimming with potential as compared to a 24 years old who might have the perception of being "maxed out"
Again, a LOT of projection but if he performs extremely well and is trying to maximize the $$ he can make playing ball, he may have decisions to make. And honestly it'd likely be a good problem for any team to have.
Agreed, that the point I was trying to get to with Hawkins but I didn't quite get there. Hawkins grad transferred to BC where he thought he'd get more pro looks. But, because of his age (and a season-ending injury) he didn't get many looks. I believe the NCAA actually granted him another year of eligibility but he decided to forgo it to turn pro. Hasn't had a lucrative pro career with mostly spotty overseas gigs, but he's 25.
Zach Lofton is another one of those guys who transferred all around and was also a 24-year old rookie. Probably won't ever play outside of the g-league. He's 26 now, turning 27 in the fall, and not many are going to be willing to take a chance on a 27-year old where there are 18 year olds waiting in the wings.
