Preseason watch lists

It's that time of year when these types of lists start coming out. "Making the Madness " has two lists out; 1] Top 100 Players in the Nation, & 2} Top 100 Mid Major Players.

For the Top 100 Nationally , the Valley had 2 make the list ; Missouri State's Isiaih Mosley came in as the # 50 player in the country and Drake's Roman Penn as the # 98.

On the Top 100 Mid Majors [ done by a different writer] Gaige Prim actually came in ahead of Mosley @ # 26 and Mosley was # 38 [ Yeah , # 50 nationally, but only #38 MM :huh: ] I thought both of those were a bit low, but I may be prejudiced :roll:

Penn came in @ # 46 MM, AJ Green @ #58, Tank Hemphill @ # 62, Lucas Williamson @ # 63, Tyreke Key @ # 81;
Marquis Kennedy of Loyola and Austin Phyfe, UNI made the Honorable Mention list.

In Mosley and Prim, Missouri State has two high-level and veteran talents, and there is plenty of supporting cast pieces to work with. Point being, if I were a Missouri State fan, I'd have an NCAA tournament-or-bust mindset going into this season. Unless there are health issues, anything less would probably not reflect very well on the coaching and/or the team leadership/chemistry.
Good to see a lot of MVC talent worthy of being recognized on the list. I could probably quibble over Domask and even Jones being omitted and Kennedy being included, but winning is a big factor in most recognitions, and of course Domask is coming off an injury-marred season. But at their best and when healthy, both of those guys are pretty damn good ... hopefully that will be on display this coming season and it leads to more Ws for the Salukis, too.

I'm not trying to defend Coach Dana Ford here, I'll say the same for any Valley coach or similar MM coach at this point, which is , I don't know how you can evaluate them based on making the NCAA Tourney anymore. Yeah they should make it some of the time, but when you look at the scheduling difficulties most have and the fact an at large bid is entirely dependent on first getting, then winning a similar # of Q1/Q2 games that any mid -lower level P-5+1 team can and will, it's getting very difficult.

That said, yeah this is the year expectations for Ford will ramp up. Overall, I think he's done a decent job building a team , especially given the problems he encountered culture wise when he went the Transfer U route in year 2. This team still has some transfers, D-1 and juco combined, but it also has a nice core of HS/Prep kids who now have ownership and leadership roles in the program. He's proven he gets enough talent to beat most of the Valley teams consistently , but hasn't beaten the really good teams but rarely. Now he has to if he's gonna avoid some scrutiny.

The Bears have 5 starters back including the two stars, but they could easily have two new starters in Clay and Minnett, get 7'0 Hawaii transfer Carper back from an injury year as post depth, and I really like freshman Isaac Haney as additional backcourt depth. The 6'1 Minnett , IUPUI's all time leading 3 point shot maker and a 16 ppg scorer is said to have been very impressive in summer workouts, and of course everyone is familiar with Donovan Clay. Should be interesting. Still, I doubt I pick the Bears to win it, probably 3rd or 4th. Gotta see CDF do it first.

Does anyone know if the same COVID-19 rules will be in effect for the upcoming season, or are they modified?

Haven't heard, but if teams are fully [ or close] vaccinated, then contact tracing shouldn't be as big an issue in making large #s of players unavailable. I hope if a team can't play a game due to failure in this, they simply have to forfeit; the other teams shouldn't be penalized or inconvenienced .
