If we cant make the big dance, I will still be glad we will get decent schools into our arena. Still hoping for a chance on the at large though. Probably less than a 20% chance but let's see what happens this week.

Villanova goes down tonight. This after Old Dominion knocked off VCU and also Butler kept the Horizon from being a multiple bid league. The stars are aligning for Cuonzo's guys.

I decided the time had come to end my self imposed sabbatical. And after the heartache from Sunday had subsided, it was time.

Villanova is not a lock. I know for a fact that Jay Wright is a nervous wreck about making the field of 68. So far everything has gone well for the Bears, except for Marquette winning yesterday. We are right on the bubble as of now. I think we get in ahead of Saint Mary's and VCU so it'll be close.

St. Mary's gets in before MSU. St. Mary's was also a regular season conference champion losing in the championship of the conference tourney. But St. Mary's played a serious non-conference schedule. The Gaels actually beat St. Johns, Texas Tech, New Mexico State, and Mississippi State in the nonconference schedule, and lost competitive games against BYU, San Diego State, and Utah State. They also have one win against Gonzaga (who is now a tourney team). The Gaels right now have 24 wins, going 6-4 int eh last 10 and 14-6 in the last 20. And they scheduled another game to come this weekend, after their conference tourney, just to have one final shot at showing that they are tourney worthy. I don't see any argument that puts MSU's resume ahead of St. Mary's.

Similarly, VCU owns wins over Wake Forest, UCLA, and George Mason (as well as WSU, which is MSU's "best" win), and also played competitively with Tennessee and South Florida in the non-conference schedule. The Rams ended the season with 23 wins, going 5-5 in the last 10 and 14-6 in the last 20. I think that resume gets VCU in ahead of MSU, too.

Like it or not, MSU had no good wins at all in the nonconference, had a competitive loss to Tennessee, but probably points to WSU as its best win. 8-2 in the final 10 helps, but 15-5 in the last 20 isn't a much stronger finish than either of those other two teams, both of which have much better non-conference schedules and wins. And who you play and beat really seems to be the most important consideration to the committee.

How does the NCAA let teams (St. Mary's/Weber St.) schedule games after their conference tourney? If I am not mistaken, isn't this the second time that they have done so? If that is the case, then the bracketbusters should be assembled from those teams who are close who don't win their conference tournaments. If teams are able to boost their resume/seeding or even get in as a result of an extra game, I think more BCS schools will start holding back a game.

Maybe this is something the MVC should look into since our conference tournament ends way earlier than others and now it seems like our teams are needing an extra boost.

St Mary's did this a couple of years ago to show the NCAA that Patty Mills would be healthy for the tounrnament. If a team hasn't played the maximum number of games, it is allowed.

edit: my solution to fixing bracketbusters was essentially what you have offered here as well.
