Official Apology

This is something you rarely hear of:

Gregg Marshall just reported on the radio that he received an apology from one of the officials who worked the WSU vs. UCONN game in Maui early this season. Though it was through a third party, the official wanted to let Gregg know that the crew bungled two calls in the final minutes of the game. I believe the Shockers were up by 9 with around 2 minutes left and ended up losing by 4.

The second situation was in relation to the VCU Bracket Buster game. The Valley head of officials sided with Marshall and told him that the foul on the last play shouldn't have been called by the CAA crew. Certainly, that's not as valuable as an apology from the official who actually called your game, but it's worth something, considering refs like to cover for each other till death do them part.
Random MVCFans.com member, circa 2007: "Gregg Marshall is in over his head in this conference."

I'd like to see the apologies on the record from someone otherwise it sounds like excuse making from a coach who realizes he didn't meet expectations and is grasping at straws. As for the VCU game, there were several calls at the end that were questionable that went both ways and you really can't argue a judgment call.

Actually, this happens all the time. I suspect that every school in the conference has received multiple telephone calls from the Valley office acknowledging mistakes made by referees. It happens literally every single year.

What is rare is for a head coach to discuss it so openly. It seems a little whiny at best and, like dawg indicated, an attempt by a coach to try to excuse an otherwise disappointing season.

Maybe he can cut out the newspaper article and tape it to his office door. That has proven to be pretty successful for Marshall in the past. I think after he did it last time, WSU has made the tournament every year. :Violin:
