Typically, a coach who is recruiting a kid who moves to another job will call the parent or recruit to advise that he is moving on. The ethical coaches do not make the first move. They wait for the parent or recruit to ask if the coach will consider accepting the kid at the new program. The ethical coach advises the kid that he was recruited to SMS and should consider honoring his LOI. Some coaches will even call the old program to advise them that they were first contacted by the parent or recruit. Playing in the SEC is different than the MVC and some recruits may not be able to make the talent leap.

The unethical coach does not give a damn and cherry picks by taking the SEC caliber recruits with him.

Conversely, the recruit can get screwed. What if he was recruited to MSU based on a certain skill set and type of play and the new guy is the exact opposite? The new coach may not want the player.

Tough situation.

First lie: "Coach, I only want to play at MSU."

Second lie: "Son, I will be here for the next 7 years."

Third lie: "Coach, I will commit to MSU if you will not recruit any other fill in the blank."

Fourth lie: "Son, you are the only PG I will recruit."
There is no difference between basketball and life. Give both your best and ignore the "fans" on the sideline.

As far as we know, Martin has only contacted players that have not signed LOI's. Which I have no problem with. Now, if he firsts contacts one of our signed guys, that would be a problem. But if they want out of their LOI's because Martin is gone, I have no problem with that either.

The one thing I will give Greg McDermott credit for... When he left UNI for Iowa State, he told UNI's recruits to honor their commitment to the Panthers. There was some concern at the time that Jordan may have committed to UNI to early and might want to go play in the Big XII. Obviously having Jake take the job as an internal hire helped keep the recruiting class intact.

That is kinda what we are hoping here. That one of the assistants is good enough to get the job or that if Lusk is hired, that Williams and Woodberry will stay on as assistants.

This is going to happen. It's hard to blame the coach or the player.

I think the equitable solution is that any school taking a recruit along with a coach pays the school losing the recruit for the recruiting investment made by the school. Maybe throw a little penalty in to make it meaningful. Maybe $100K per player recruited by the coach's former school if there's a LOI. Maybe $50K if there's no LOI.

I guess he gave different advice to his son.

Indeed he did. And despite the unusual circumstances some Panther fans will never forgive him for the bad situation it put UNI in, way too late in the recruiting cycle to make up for the loss of Doug. I can't blame them for wanting to coach and play together, but I can blame them for the timing and circumstances under which it happened.
