From reading that about this at a couple of places, it seems like Kent State is suing Geno Ford for the balance of his contract amount.
It seems a bit odd that he'd have a dollar-for-dollar buyout or that amount would be a damage incurred by KSU since they don't have to pay it any longer, but I'm not an expert in determining that.
Perhaps he didn't have a buyout and this is KSU trying to save face and get something out of the deal. After all, they've lost a few successful coaches in recent memory and their fans could be restless.
OR...maybe BU's AD didn't ask permission to talk to Ford before they did. It's common practice in athletics to ask the other AD for permission to speak to their coach for a number of reasons, one being liability for messing with a guy under contract and enticing him to break that contract -- which is illegal...difficult to prove at times, but still illegal.
OR...maybe BU's AD did ask and was told no, yet still pursued him. That also would be a no-no on a number of levels.
I'm not sure how I feel about this. One one hand, KSU is not helping itself for future hires, but if BU and/or Ford did something nefarious, then they're well within their rights and obligations to pursue the lawsuit.
