Dick Vitale's Top 40 - Wichita State #31

Good recognition for the Shockers.

31. Wichita State: Last season, Gregg Marshall's club won the NIT; he has bigger things in mind this season.

It is said that most of the ladies like Dick but most of the guys see him for the biased prick he is.

Dickie's glass eye lives.

Maybe with DV's Karma, WSU could win the MVC tourney this year?

This is a little silly. It's good to ge the recognition - I guess. Not even many avid WSU fans are picking WSU to win the Valley this year, so I guess Indiana State and Creighton must be higher on Vitale's list.

I'm sure I'm in the minority but I've really grown to like Dickie V over the years. He was the commentator for one of the Bears games last year that was on ESPN. He was very complimentary of the Bears and the MVC.

Thing is all the "pundits" are going to look strictly at last year's NIT run and the fact that the Shox return 4 of the top 5 scorers from last year. So that will automatically make them like WSU's chances this year. Obviously those that do some research will see it won't be quite that easy and there are a couple other teams that will be just as (if not more) capable of winning the Valley this next year. The Shox are still plenty talented, although not as deep (especially front court). Anytime you have to replace 4-5 important pieces, regardless of stat lines, it makes it very tough. We will see what kind of chemestry the team will have when things get going and adversity hits. That will tell us what kind of potential this team has.

I still like the Shox to be in the top 3, but there will be plenty of teams that will try and have a say in whether or not that happens.

It's just the way most of this pre-season talk goes.

I would rather dive into a pool of broken glass & rusty nails than listen to that hyperbole machine.

WSU is my pick for number one this year. It is still a guard driven league (and our officiating is certainly skewed that way) and I think WSu has the best, most experienced guards. The lack of bigs might be an issue, but I don't think one can say that any of the pundits are out of line by picking WSU to win the league.

I think Creighton has the most well-balanced lubricated machine going into this year. I think they'll sustain it over the long haul. McD is really good and there won't be a lot of stuff to stop him. He'll get his points.

WSU's guard play is good in a lot of spots but not consistently good. Murry gets a lot of talk a lot of the time but can be a liability at times, as he has shown last year. Stutz would have to make Paul Miller type leaps and the newcomers would have to contribute right away for WSU to win the Valley.

I do think it'll be a fairly competitive race though. Indiana State just didn't impress me outside of their one weekend of everyone laying down for them last year. I think Jake the Great Odum will have his hands full this year. I still think UNI will be in the running when it's said and done as well.
