The really surprising thing about the SIU/Lowery situation is that Lowery really looked like he earned and deserved his current contract, until he got it - and then he immediately turned SIU's program around. That was a bad thing because SIU had been an outstanding program.
I remember making a prediction that SIU was going to be an NCAA team for at least the next five years when Lowery brought in the now-famous top-20 or something recruiting class in the nation. You know, the class that either flamed out or transferred out.
It's hard to understand how a coach who had been so successful could get a recruiting class with that much talent and that would become the undoing of a great basketball program. I'm just hoping that SIU can make a decent and timely recovery from the harm Lowery has done to that program. It took WSU a decade to come back from a bad hire. I hope SIU can recover faster than that.
