There is still 8 Big East basketball schools, so Marquette and Depaul aren't going to need try join some hybrid midwest conference. Even if they lose Notre Dame and Villanova (if they move up in football) from that group, they'll just add a couple A10 schools to that group.

I agree it's unlikely that Marquette would be willing to leave, but the group of teams referenced being in a conference together (SLU, Dayton, X, Creighton, Marq, Depaul, So. ILL, Wichita St) would make a lot of sense. I added Bradley in as a team that would fit into this conference that will probably never exist.

I agree - didn't see this coming at all. In fact, I thought the ACC was more likely to lose members. The question that will impact college basketball is what does the Big East do now? It could change the landscape entirely and cause issues for the A10 and MVC.

Playing regular conference road games 1000 miles away midweek seems much more damaging to the players academics than a tourney in which only a few teams compete.
I know, follow the money.

I agree with you, but if I am not mistaken, the NCAA has no control whatsoever over conference alignment.
