MSU beats Missouri Southern 93-80. Thoughts?

College basketball is less fun to watch this year. Bears are still learning each other's tendancies. Marcus looked good tonight, as did Gavin. Lusk played 14 guys tonight and said post game that it's likely to be cut down to 10. Bears have yet to run an offensive set or play thier primary defense for this year. Long ways to go still but think they are headed in the right direction. Really think shortening the bench will help a ton.

This was one of those games where the new foul rules or at least this officiating crews interpretation of such, just created an uneven choppy game. That and Lusk seemed intent on trying every conceivable lineup option for a minute or two. He also seemed intent on letting a few of the frosh and Mvouika play thru periods of poor play and decision making rather than the normal quick hook and conversation on the bench. The only real positives I took were Pickens once again was extremely quick and bouncy in his minutes and continues to look healthier than he's been since early in his freshman year. Most of the Valley has never seen Pick really able to spring the way he could in High School, probably more at 75% the past couple years. I'd say he looks more around 90% now and it's fun to watch. Not an offensive force but he makes plays around the boards and defensively that are really fun to watch. Thurman had another really efficient night and it's clear Lusk is pushing him to be more aggressive and assertive if he wants playing time and he seems to be responding. He's shooting the ball extremely well, rebounding pretty consistently, and is at least trying defensively. Lastly Marcus showed why he is a top level guard taking over the game in spurts when he thought he needed to. Nice to have that guy who can get his own shot when you need a bucket.

I thought we looked pretty good offensively. Much less so on defense. We gave up too many easy buckets and committed too many fouls. I don't like the way the games are being called if this was an example of how it's going to be this year.

Lusk played a LOT of players again and I agree with agrinut that shortening the bench will help. He's got some tough choices though.

Ruder continues to light it up. Marshall played well. Pickens played well and seems really healthy. Thurman seems to have worked his way back into the 2nd unit. Gulley seems fine physically but seems a little rusty.

MO Southern has several players that look like they could play D1.

Could have been better but not bad overall

That's disappointing. Leave it to the NCAA to mess up something that really didn't need too much messing with. I get it that the intent of the rules is good, to stop all of the grabbing inferior teams do to try and catch up. But from what I've seen so far in the exhibition games, this is going a bit too far. 3 hour games, 80 free throws, little to no flow because teams can't even breathe while on defense before a foul is called is all a little much. I don't watch NBA games for a reason.

Didn't matter tonight, might have been the crew but it was atrocious. I may be wrong but there are a few teams in the valley that have made a living at grab and clutch D and I think they are going to really struggle as they have never had the athletes to play this style (which is why they play that type of D).

I got a good chuckle with the irony of your post, Evansville fan.
