When the Season Tipoff game in Dallas fell through (not a single name school would face WSU, so that tipoff event ended up with 3 games intead of 4), Marshall still wanted a game before facing WKU in midnight game.

Marshall offered Emporia State $8,000 if they would come to Wichita when Emporia State already had games scheduled the night before and the night after the game Marshall was offering. The Emporia State coach said it was an offer they couldn't refuse.

Emporia State's players may have been tired and may be worse today, but they did get to play against a F4 team. That's kind of a "biggie" for guys at a D2 school - even if they did get boat raced.

Not a lot you can pick up from a game against a D2, but I thought the Shox looked well and took care of business. Our backcourt is legit. Our frontcourt, outside of Early, needs a little work. We miss too many point-blankers and rebounding wasn't where it needs to be.

We'll know a lot more in 48 hours, 48 hours exactly actually.

I don't fault WSU for getting a home game in first. You have a tight schedule in the first week with 4 games, including the odd-start time with WKU. All at home, so that is nice at least.

And that parrot is a freaking hilarious response to the 'criticism' in another thread.

Yes, not being critical of WSU in the slightest. I was just remarking on how much that would stink to be an Emporia State player and play back-to-back-to-back nights. That's a killer on the body at this level.
[Insert snappy comeback]

Baker and VanVleet are simply not the players they were last season. Most of the Valley never saw Baker, so he'll be new anyway, but VanVleet has taken his already solid game and morphed it into a big time role.

They're good, really good, and a lot of fun to watch.
