Smokescreen. Irrelevant. Yeah, I could see how it could be seen as embarrassing. But it's really not.
His name was thrown out there, and it may not have been his desires. The Parker Executive Search firm likes to get its own candidates names out in the open and associated with openings. However, more often than not, this is a ploy to create better opportunities for guys in its stable (for a guy like Jeter, think Marquette/Xavier) and to lead the public away from what's really happening. In order to save face, he might also have felt the need to publicly do something if he wasn't even extended the offer (which I tend to think is really the story here).
Something similar happened with Crean when he was at Marquette...he was never offered the Illinois job, but he publicly rebuffed it. Then he went to Indiana.
Wouldn't read too much into the situation, yet.
