Win NIT or CBI and get a raise?

Postby bigdawg » March 28th, 2011, 3:23 pm

Just wondering if WSU or CU fans think their coach will or should get a raise for winning. It sounds like Shox fans want the school to pony up to keep Marshall, which is tantamount to giving him a raise for not meeting expectations during the season and missing the tourney.

Does he really deserve a raise?

Winning the NIT is a decent accomplishment, and you could justify an extension or a raise IMO. CBI, no way...

Haha, no way, it's a nice way to end the season for Creighton and gives us a hope for next year but MAC is making plenty...

Mac just received a 9 million dollar contract, I'm pretty sure he's good.

Who's talking about giving Marshall a raise? I haven't seen that on SN... I could see a little something possibly if he pulls it out in NYC, but nothing big. Someone did ask what we thought the ceiling is at WSU, but it wasn't related to thinking we need to pony up and pay him now.

In one word, No.

The NIT and to a lesser degree, the CBI, are simply fun events for the fans and an avenue for more revenue to be pumped into college basketball. At the end of the day, they mean little. On the other hand, these events can be a precursor for things to come. If Creighton and Wichita State continue their quality play from these tournaments into next season and both teams get into the NCAA's and win at least one game, then raises may be in order.

The fact of the matter is this, the NCAA tournament matters. The NIT and the CBI do not. The NCAA tournament is the benchmark. The NCAA tournament is what 345 Division 1 schools should set as a goal. Going deep into the NIT or CBI is the consolation prize for a decent season that fell short of the ultimate prize. No need to additionally reward a well-paid coach for an okay season. If you have an up and coming coach and he is trending upward, give him a raise, coaches like Marshall and McDermott don't need any more money because they almost got the job done.

I don't think any Creighton fans have any delusions about the CBI. We understand it is a chance for our young guys to get more playing time and for everyone to continue to learn McDermott's system. Despite the fact that we have five seniors, most of our key players are young and at clutch time against Oregon the five on the floor consisted of a 2 freshmen, 2 sophomores (one of which has only played half a season) and a junior. I am pretty bullish on our youth and like what the McDermotts have going on. That being said, I don't think that if we win a title it should lead to some sort of pay raise for McDermott.

Marshall probably shouldn't get a pay raise for winning the NIT either. If he does get a bump in pay, it would be more because WSU doesn't want to lose him to NC State, Oklahoma, Mizzou, etc., rather than as a reward for an NIT title.

I guess we have our answer. An extension, a $400k bonus, and probably a raise. Man if this guy actually gets his team to the NCAAs, he's going to be in Coach K company.

He received two bonuses that totaled around 13K for the NIT wins. He received the 400K for a retention bonus already written into his contract. His extension and raise would be due to market value, not the NIT.

How many years extension did Marshall get on his contract?
