MVC all sports award

I didn't know which forum to best place this, so mods if you want to move it feel free. I just went thru and looked at the MVC title winners for the 2010-2011 school year to date. Who will win the all sports trophy?

list how many MVC sports your school sponsors

1. WSU - 4 titles (women's tennis, women's CC, indoor track, men's golf)
2. Indiana State - 2 titles (men's CC, men's indoor track) (we sponsor 13 of 18 MVC sports)
3. Illinois State - 2 titles (Softball, women's golf)
4. Northern Iowa - 2 titles (women's basketball, Volleyball)
5. Creighton - 2 titles (men's soccer, women's soccer)
6. Missouri State - 2 titles (women's swimming & diving, men's basketball)
7. Drake -1 title (men's tennis)
8. Southern Illinois - no MVC titles
9. Evansville - no MVC titles
10. Bradley - no MVC titles

3 titles left up for grabs (baseball, men's and women's outdoor track).

I don't think there is any 1 MVC school that sponsors all 18 MVC sports. And I'm not sure which school sponsors the most MVC sports, I'd guess WSU maybe, but they don't have men's or women's soccer or women's swimming & diving

and it is a little surprising that SIU has not won a single MVC title this school year. I wonder if that has ever happened??

WSU owns championships in women’s cross country, women’s indoor track, men’s golf and women’s tennis

WSU is going to win this "Award" based on sports that no one cares about, which is why this means less than nothing.

Because the overall success of the athletic department means nothing? There are only a couple of sports that the masses care about, but a healthy and successful AD can lead to success and winning elsewhere in the department as well. And considering the more popular sports around here are basketball, volleyball and baseball, things are going pretty well in Wichita considering I believe they finished 2nd in both basketball and volleyball and are currently in 2nd in baseball. It's not just the number of championships but the overall health and success of the entire department. We also may very well win womens track and the men should probably finish in the top 3. The only programs that have really struggled are the improving womens basketball team and softball.

They finished 2nd in Mens basketball and will finish 2nd or 1st more than likely in baseball I'm sorry but those are probably in general the two MVC sports most people care about.

So your comment really doesn't add up.

I'd be interested to see a breakdown of which sports are offered by each athletic program.

Really?

Then please enlighten us all about which sports this conference "cares about". Tell me again what the purpose of an all-sports trophy is if you only count the two sports people care for in the Valley?

I guess if you aren't winning the award, then it does seem pretty meaningless. Enjoy another helping of sour grapes.

I'm not sure I buy this. Why does winning titles in sports that nobody really follows help those sports that people do follow? Creighton could win 13 rowing or tennis championships and I don't see it helping the basketball or soccer program any....

Here's how it would help, right where it matters - in the bank account.

What if your school wins every conference championship and makes some noise at the national level for a couple of years in a row.

What if people start attending games in large numbers and new money starts flowing into all the programs.

How does that help the budget for your already-profitable sport(s)?

Would a few "minor" sports breaking even or turning a profit boost the recruiting or travel budget for men's basketball?

How would the rising tide of money across-the-board affect your school's athletic department?

That's ridiculous. There is no money to be made in tennis, golf, bowling, swimming, or track.
