All reports, including the most recent story this week about Rice being committed to Drake and not interested in transferring, seemed to indicate he was a pretty good kid.

Very disappointing and a huge hit to the Drake basketball program.

An excellent athlete with a free education potentially throws away at least a year's worth of Division I basketball all over some sporting goods?

To me, this seems pretty ho-hum. If every college kid who shoplifted less than $200 was caught and identified, we'd never be able to keep up just reading the list.

Situations like this have led to more sinister allegations as some players in similar circumstances have had an expectation that they didn't need to pay for items from some places.

A talent like Rice at Drake is likely to get some NCAA investigator checking whether Rice thought he was supposed to be getting some free merchandise.

Obviously Rice is working on improving his street cred in case he transfers to a BCS school in the future.
