MVC Preview article

Postby glm38 » September 28th, 2011, 7:26 pm

This article was recently posted on the Bears forum. I think the author did a pretty solid job of breaking down the MVC. Personally I disagree with his picking McDerott over Weems for POY but nobody is perfect.

Weems isn't winning PoY. It's McDermott's. There's a slight possibility if WSU or ISUb were to win the Valley, Toure', Stutz, or Odum could steal it.

Also, countdown to UNI fans being pissed off about the $$$ section....3...2..1....

It's a given then that McDermott will win POY? That's funny. This guy picks McDermott but then goes on to say Weems is primed for a big season and it's virtually a tossup. Which is a pretty fair assessment. I think they'll both have great years. But it's anything but a given especially if some of our new players come through and we finish towards the top.

Yes that is pretty brutal regarding UNI finances. If you click on the links though the one regarding cutting athletic programs is from 2010.

Pretty decent breakdown, but yeah... kind of weird to include the blurb about UNI's financial situation that was resolved a year ago.

This guy gives UNI no respect - including this in a linked article:

But according to an article from Friday's Des Moines Register, the Panthers may be forced to drop their status as a member of Division I athletics.

Sorry, UNI fans, your Prez opened Pandora's box and that's going to stick around for a while.

Considering MSU's and CU's chances of finishing high in the league, he gave Weems a lot of run for PoY. PoY is McDermott's to lose. Weems would have to find some way to get MSU into the top 2 in the league for him to be a serious candidate for PoY. I don't think that's going to happen.

Don't be surprised to see another Shocker on the All-Valley lists. Hall is the most likely candidate. He had a double-double against one of the Brazilian pro teams WSU played last summer.

I think the feeling is that until the economy turns around, the issue about state funding could resurface. What if the state of Iowa has to make more budget cuts?

By the way, I think this preview is probably the best one I've read to date. As to POY, it will go to the best player on the team that finishes in first. There is some dumb unwritten rule that seemingly forces voters to cast their ballots this way. I can think of several players over the last 10 years that were not the best player in conference, yet were named POY.

The UNI financial situation and potential to drop to D2 is something that UNI fans better get used to. Irregardless of the accuracy of reports, you had better believe that Valley schools in all sports are negatively recruiting them based upon it. It remains to be seen how large of a dent it will leave but it is an issue in recruiting.

When the story first broke in the newspapers, I immediately wondered what sort of impact it would have on recruiting.

I think it's fairly safe to put McDermotts name out there for POY. If CU wins the conference and in St. Louis I would imagine he will be a big part of it. I just don't see MSU doing much this year and therefore I don't see Weems getting player of the year.

"irregardless" lol

If UNI "better get used to it", than so should MSU. Nearly identical issues in Spingfield.
