UNI vs. Northern State

Postby strike00 » October 30th, 2011, 2:47 pm

UNI played D-II Northern State in the Panthers first exhibition today. UNI won 71-53. Pehl, Olivier, Lyle and Bohannon were out with injury and did not play. Maybe slightly disappointing, but nothing to be too upset with either. UNI shot just 4-28 from 3.
the starting lineup was
PG-Deon Mitchell
G-Anthony James
G-Johnny Moran
F-Jake Koch
F-Seth Tuttle

James lead everyone with 15 points. Tuttle, Chip Rank, Marvin Singleton, and Nate Buss all had 9 points each. Mitchell had 8 and Koch had 7. Rank and Singleton lead the team with 10 rebounds each. Freshmen scored half the points for the Panthers

Moran and Sonnen combined for 3 points, so not a great performance by them, but I'm not too worried about them.

UNI's second exhibition will be next Friday.

Um.

Hopefully this is a second straight year of Butler getting a slow start. Our SoS needs them to at least be decent.

50 points for a Butler team isn't a good thing

We are a very young team and our game against the same Northern State team was never in doubt. Obviously an exhibition game doesn't mean anything, but at the same time you don't want to lose them. Butler lost a lot, but they need to step it up.

Yes, we do. Not so much for what other people think of the Valley, but what other people think of the Aces. Including me.

UNI defeated Division-III Dubuque, coached by former Panther Robbie Sieverding, in their final exhibition game 57-43. Anthony James led the Panthers with 13 points and freshman post Seth Tuttle added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Marc Sonnen scored 8 points and grabbed 9 rebounds off the Panther bench. Defense was on display as UNI held Dubuque to two baskets in the first 10 minutes of the second half. UNI controlled the boards 42-29 against a smaller opponent. Offense was rusty again, but as has been stated, Coach Jake tend to focus about 75%-80% of practice time on defense in the early going.

Looks like a starting line-up of: Mitchell, Moran, James at guard with Koch and Tuttle at post. Austin Pehl is still out with leg issues and may be held out until December. Jake used a 10 man rotation in different combinations most of the game, even had one set with Marc Sonnen at 6'3" the smallest Panther on the floor. 3 freshman did not play in any exhibition games and are likely redshirt candidates: Lyle, Olivier, and Bohannon.

Redshirting Bohannon seems like a bit of a surprise. I expected him to be able to contribute right away.

We simply have too many guards and not enough room for Bohannon right now. He also needs to add strength and size.

I'm very excited to see how Deon Mitchell performs this year. His ball handling is smooth and his quickness seems to be on par with our upper classmen guards. It's very uncommon for Jake to start a true freshman, so he must have a lot of confidence in him. Outside of Dougie Fresh, Deon is probably the biggest recruit UNI has signed.
