WSU Short Some Players in Exhibition Against Emporia State

Postby Aargh » November 8th, 2011, 11:49 am

WSU's first exhibition is tonight (Tuesday) against Emporia State. Emporia State has a new coach and only returns 2 players from last year's team. they are picked 8th in their league, and don't have any players taller than 6'7" Marshall has said he's going to play everybody eligible (transfers from Oregon (Armstead) and Ohio (Mitchell) are not eligible). Red shirt decisions will be made Wednesday. Two Fr perimeter players (Baker and Wessel) are considered too valuable to lose a year playing behind WSU's current perimeter players. Baker is about certain to RS. Wessel is being decided. I rate him as "likely" to RS.

Toure Murry will miss the game. He is still in a lot of pain from his bruised ribs and partially collapsed lung from Shocker Madness. Murry was injured before the Brazil trip and his current injury is dragging past the estimated one-week recovery. Murry is expected to play against Charleston Southern Sunday in WSU's opener, but he's missed a lot of practice and hasn't had much "game" experience.

Joe Ragland's status for the game is either still being determined or any announcements are being withheld. Joe is getting a "time out" for some problems with class attendance Marshall has said it looks like Joe is on the right path now. But there is still no indication if he's going to play tonight. Marshall is hanging on to Ragland's NIT championship ring until Joe meets some goals he and Marshall set and agreed to.

WSU has 8 or 9 players with some level of injury. Murry's is the only one that will keep him out of the game. Anacreon (6'7" JuCo PF) and Egharvba (sp?? - 6'6" Fr ) seem to have had injuries that have slowed their progress in practice to this point in the season.

As long as he and the others with nagging injuries are good to go by the time they land in Puerto Rico, we'll be alright

We play Emporia State too. In our home opener Nov 19. It will be interesting to compare the 2 games. Such comparisons are always imperfect but still interesting.

Sure Feb 1 will be real deal. But I think there are several Valley teams playing the same team before conference play begins. The comparisons will still be interesting.

So far - a little over halfway through the first half. It's hard to get much out of this game because of the player combinations being used, but...

Without Murry, Williams is looking like the most effective perimeter player.
Stutz is pretty disappointing. He should have no problem against a 6'7" guy, even though that guy is really quick.
If Orukpe and Hall are in the game at the same time, I doubt many players under 6'9" will touch a rebound.
Orukpe has a couple of blocks, and 3 points. He may be outplaying Stutz right now.
WSU will get their share of fouls down low, but opponents will get a lot of fouls there too.

82-43 final

Shox freshmen and newcomers got a lot of minutes. Looking forward to Sunday and start of season.

WSU - 82
ESU - 43

Shox scored 50 in the second half. The Fr and newbies looked much better in the second half. Stutz had a good few minutes, but sat out most of the second half. Hall should be among the Valley's leading rebounders.

Tekele Cotton (true Fr) will probably not RS and will be the #3 PG - maybe #2. Kyles was used a lot at SF, with Williams at the 2 (Murry out). Williams might be better backing up the 2 than backing up PG.

Ede Egharvba didn't suit up and took everything WSU-related off his twitter account. He was a potential backup at SF. There is an "announcement" coming but no hint what the "announcement" will be.

Cotton looked good enough that he could be the #2 PG. That would allow Williams to concentrate on SG. Smith seems to be the 6th man again.
