Don't count the Shockers out on this. They are getting a great defender who in Armstead who had a lot of steals up at Oregon. I think the Shocks might struggle on offense some, but their defense will be tough.

Pinkie will have a hard time this year. I'll take the team with the season record for steals at Oregon, the coach that prides himself on his defense, the 7' shotblocker, the Parade HS All American, the 2x Juco player of the year, and guards that pack a lunch pail to every game. The Shockers will have the best defense in the valley, and it won't be close.
Our last five are still collectively better than your starting lineup.

I'll go with UNI as best defensive team as they have led the conference for the last three years in a row. My second pick would WSU as they have placed second in each of the the last three years. My third pick would be Missouri State.

UNI - 3 year avg. = 59.1 points per game
WSU - 3 year avg. = 61.9 points per game
MSU - 3 year avg. = 63.8 points per game
ISUr - 3 year avg. = 64.6 points per game
ISUb - 3 year avg. = 65.2 points per game
SIU - 3 year avg. = 67.2 points per game
DU - 3 year avg. = 67.7 points per game
CU - 3 year avg. = 67.8 points per game
BU - 3 year avg. = 68.5 points per game
UE - 3 year avg. = 69.6 points per game

UNI controls the tempo of a game. That is still a type of defense. So I have no problem saying UNI has been the best defensive team for the past few years. Especially since SIU is no longer floorburn U. Although you HAVE to also look at defensive shooting percentage and I don't believe UNI is quite as strong in that area as a couple other teams in the Valley. That said it's hard to pick the absolute best defensive team because it just depends on what stats you feel determin the best defense.

I will say that WSU appears to be a pretty good defensive team. They will have to rely on strong defense even more this year until the new players get comfortable in the Marshall offensive system. There are so many sets in his system that it can be difficult for newcomers to grasp it completely. They will rely on their effort on defense to carry them at times next year. I think we have a VERY good defensive unit for next year. Cotton is quite good on defense, Armstead is proven to be very good as well. Those 2 are going to really annoy opposing guards. Throw in that Williams has been getting better on defense and the backcourt is going to be pesky. Then throw in Orupke and he will clear the paint out by himself. Hall has a chance to be good on defense as well.

**I am trying to just go off of memory about how good of a defensive shooting % team UNI is or isn't. If I am wrong on this stat then so be it.

What??? So tell me how Greg will have a "hard time this year"?????

It was in jest that I think the Jays will be the best defense next year although I think they will be greatly improved. That really isn't saying all that much after last year.

But Greg E. will be a beast next year that few teams will have much of an answer for.

Defensive points per game does not mean a lot to me.

There are some teams that prefer to walk the ball up the floor and milk the clock.

I am not naming any names.

UNI does walk the ball up, but we also play a defensive style that forces most teams to use 25-30 seconds of the shot clock before they shoot as well. We also don't pick up a lot of steals or blocked shots as we tend to try and force the other team to take shots they don't really want and then deny offensive rebounds. Some teams rack up lots of steals and blocks, but also give up lots of lay-ups, put backs and free throw attempts.
