Top PG's This Year

Postby Aargh » August 3rd, 2013, 11:08 pm

I'm going with this lineup for the top 3:

1. Odum
2. Lemon
3. VanVleet

Watching VanVleet has given me some insight into Odum. You've got to wonder how those guys get to the hoop or get so deep into the lane. It doesn't look like they're doing anything special from the stands or over a TV screen. Face-to-face on the court, they're giving the key that defenders pick up for one move, and then they do another move. I think it even comes down to eye movement.

The 3 I've listed are excellent at penetration. They're crafty, deceptive, and hard to defend because of their ability to confuse defenders.

If there are others that should have been included, or if the list needs to be expanded, put your guy up for consideration. I think the 3 I've listed will emerge as the top 3 in the league this year.

I don't think Lemon will be a point guard this year. I think the plan is for Anthony Fields (transfer from Wake Forest) to be the Bradley point guard. However, I haven't seen any of the BU practices so far. There will be more answers once the team plays some games in the Bahamas this month.

Why don't we make a top five list for each position? Maybe one every week. Something to do until the season starts lol. I too don't consider WLJ a point guard. He has had to play point but his game is more suited as a SG. That is the list id put him on. As for point guards

1. Odum
2. Marshall
3. Van vleet
4. Mitchell
5. Fields /Balentine

Carter, Daniels and Madison will be a potent trio for Drake.

Carter was Drake's starter last season. Like most juco transfers in their first year in D1, he was inconsistent. Very good at times (20 points, 7 rebounds in win vs. Creighton), not so good some of the time. The new coaching staff has had very good things to say about him. I think Phelps' "system" really hindered Carter, who is much better when he can get in the open court and create.

Daniels was the starting point guard at Boston College 2 years ago as a freshman. Sat out last season at Drake as a transfer. I can see him and Carter both playing at the same time. Will be a very small guard court, but extremely quick.

Madison was Drake's starter 2 years ago as a freshman before missing last season with injury.

Here is a link to a thread I started in June:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3158

Here are some of the projected starting PGs, but I think Walt is a SG, Drake is up in the air, I don't see Balentine as a PG, and Ill St apparently has 4 possible starters. Lastly, Beane and Marshall are also combo-guards in my book but will likely initiate the offense at the start of the game.

Bradley: Walt Lemon Jr/Fields
Drake: Carter/Madison/Daniels
Evansville: No idea
Illinois State: Keane/Knight/Lofton/Lee/Hunter
Indiana State: Jake Odum
Loyola: Keke White
Missouri State: Marcus Marshall
Northern Iowa: Deon Mitchell
Southern Illinois: Beane/Fillyaw
Wichita State: Fred VanVleet

With that list, I am going to leave all new comers off my list. All combo guards (Lemon, Marshall, Beane, Ballentine) I will rank with the SGs. Here's my list with relevant stats (assist/TO, rebounds, steals, points per 40)

1. Odum: 5.5/3.2, 5.4, 1.8, 16.3
2. VanVleet: 5.8/3.0, 4.5, 2.3, 10.8
3. Mitchell: 5.4/3.6, 3.5, 2.0, 14.0
4. Carter: 5.4/3.5, 3.5, 1.9, 14.7
5. Keane: 7.0/4.2, 4.6, 1.1, 5.9

Honorable Mention is Jeff "Keke" White of Loyola. I haven't seen him play, but he is said to have come on strong when he started at the end of the year.
Stats per 40: 4.9/3.2, 4.3, 1.1, 9.5

Hard to say whether M. Marshall will be the pg for this years Bears. He'll play it some no doubt, but he will be looked upon to provide points more than assists, and if Williams/ Thomas combo can manage well enough, then Marcus will play mostly at the sg. He's had a great summer and is showing lots of confidence in his ability to score.

I've got Daishon Knight penciled in for Illinois State with potential to play both guard spots.
He'll be a good one.

UE will have 2 frosh competing for the starting PG spot.

The front runner appears to be Boo Gibson 6'3"...Boo won just about every award given in the city of Cleveland.
The News-Herald POY, the Cleveland Plain Dealer POY, MVP of the state tournament, & state champion. 11.9ppg, 8.9apg, 3.93spg, 6.4rpg, & team leading 48 blocks. He was on the same team with 2015 PF Carlton Bragg (6'9" 5 star being recruited most Big 10 teams).

Jaylon Brown 5'11"...Rivals 3 star, Marty describes Jaylon as one of the most athletically gifted players to come to UE. Jaylon is more of an offensive player than Gibson. Chose UE over Wichita, Butler, Cincy, Dayton, Ohio, ISUB, St. Bonnie, Toledo, (and others) with Valpo, Ball St., Minn, Ill, and Indiana having interest.
