Will there be any change in MVC membership in next 5 years?

Postby BUDude » August 13th, 2013, 5:20 pm

Take into account what is happening with the NCAA and it seems like more changes are on the horizon. Will the MVC have any change to our membership as a result of this? Or is it possible that the MTN looks to add a hoops only school or that the A10 looks west?

With their continual success I could see Wichita going somewhere but I could only see them going everywhere if they went to the A10 or the new Big East. I think that they would be a great fit for the Big 12, but with no football team I don't think so...

If they go anywhere, it'd probably be west. Not sure that the MWC is a fit for them (or a step up) and I'm not sure they'd want to be in the heavily Catholic West Coast Conference.

That said, I can see the MVC adding some mid- to mountain teams to appease WSU.

I think WSU will bolt if they can. I also think the conference landscape will look even more different in 5 years. I could imagine a separate super conference for the top 40 or so football programs and a super conference for basketball as well. Who knows but I'm sure things won't be stabilized for years.

Yes. Hard to tell where, because I don't think this realignment business is done. First wild card is the rumored Holy Land expansion for 2014.

The only conference to the west they'd go is the MWC. And the MWC is definitely a step up from the MVC. I think for WSU to get a shot at any conference, they'll have to continue to make noise in March and even then, I'm not sure if there will be options for a school that doesn't have football.

As far as the MVC adding teams to appease WSU, that won't happen. But you're new to the MVC so I won't give you a hard time. If the MVC ever goes to 12, the teams added will be in the east. I'm not sure the MVC wants to grow, but if they do, it'll be about saving money and not getting better. They'll want to make sure that buses are the main option for the schools with less funds available to them and would hate for them to have to take more than one or two rides on one of those fancy, shmancy winged contraptions that fly like the birds.

WSU will leave if an opportunity presents itself.

Bradley might be an option as well if they can start turning their potential into results. They could tag along with WSU if they moved east.

Missouri State could be an option for moving into an FBS conference at some point.

I think all of those are unlikely, but I definitely don't see any other program moving in the next five years.

I give maybe WSU a 20% chance of finding a new landing spot for more elite basketball. I give Bradley maybe a 10% chance of going to the A-10, and Drake a 5%. I give Missouri St a 10% chance of being ready for FBS in 5 years, and Illinois St 5%. I give St Louis about a 25% chance of missing the Big East and wanting to try the MVC instead. I see maybe a 10% chance of Dayton getting tired of the A-10 and joining us. And maybe Elgin gets restless and goes after a 5% chance of expanding to 12 with other teams.

No move in itself is likely, but, boy, those small percentages add up quick. Very quick. Something will change, somewhere, but we still don't know where or how.

By the way, I can't believe the MWC is going forward with its imbalance. I would've bet anything they'd have addressed it. Wichita with their final 4 run has barged to the top of that hypothetical, IMO.

I think WSU fans need to give up hope of going east to the A-10 or new Big East, I just see no way that happens. I don't even see a move west, barring the WCC losing a team, I think they're done expanding and the Mountain West and PAC-12 are pretty much out of the question because of football. The lack of football has pretty much screwed WSU's chances of going to a better conference.
