Recruiting Ratings and Conference Success

Postby AngryWheat=FTW= » August 13th, 2013, 6:43 pm

I put together a lengthy report of the current compiled recruiting rankings for each MVC team and compared that ranking to the success in conference over the last three years. I found it surprising that WSU isn't even in the top four of the Valley based on the aggregate rankings of our signed players yet we are number one in Valley performance over the last three years.

Illinois St. --- 2.372
Indiana St. --- 2.372
Bradley --- 2.344
Creighton --- 2.333
WSU --- 2.250
SIU --- 2.226
UNI --- 2.190
MSU --- 2.179
Evansville --- 2.103
Drake --- 2.067
Loyola --- 2.056

While high recruit rankings hasn't seemed to correlate with top Valley finishes lately, it does seem to in the Big East. If you want to see how Creighton compares with their new conference members and a possible foretelling of their record next year, you can read the rest of the report here.

So you are taking our recruiting history in the mvc, and using that as an indicator of how we will compete against schools that regularly pull in 4-star recruits thanks to the exposure of the big east, and not accounting for how the money and exposure of the Big East will positively affect recruiting going forward? You don't see anything wrong with that logic?

You guys are going to be awesome! I wouldn't worry about what an MVC site has to say.

Aggregate averages are very misleading for a team like WSU built on top ranked jucos.

Did you read my full report? I was specifically talking about Creighton next year. As far as how you will do in the future --- I suspect a lower half finish most years. I base this on how lower-half schools recruited when the Big East was whole and the loss of recruiting potential in the new league. Creighton will have nothing to offer over the original Big East members and I don't know if they will even be able to recruit against Xavier. Perhaps there will be recruiting competition against Butler but even they have a huge head start. It will be interesting to watch.

Yep. WSU's AA JUCOs don't really fit into the recruiting rankings.

I thought at first they weren't being rated but when I clicked on Early he was given 2.5 stars. That might be a fair rating coming from division 3 was it? I believe Wiggins had a 2.5 as well.

I'm far from an expert here but it seems like the data is pointing to Coach Marshall having a hell of an eye for undiscovered talent.

Eh. They're given ratings, but I wouldn't really put any faith in it. I don't think they really make any effort to scout JUCO players.

Definitely think our coaching staff does a great job with spotting talent, but I do think the JUCO angle skews our numbers.
