Bulldogs looked poor at times, but won by 20.

Lots of substitutions, lots of different line-ups, lots of different sets.

Lots of new and/or inexperienced players.....I knew it wouldn't be pretty at times. I did see some encouraging things.

Gary Ricks led the way with 19. Richard Carter had 15 and Blake Danielak 12.

I saw more different offensive sets and more different defenses from Drake yesterday than I saw in 5 years under Phelps.

Van Deest injured his back last week, so didn't do much....1 point in 14 minutes. His backup, Jacob Enevold Jensen is going to be fun to watch develop....6'11", 250 pound freshman.....he's raw, but you gotta love his size and his motor....he's aggressive as hell and goes full speed all the time.

I'm guessing the other guy you're referring to is Aaron Hawley....he looked pretty good and finished with 10 points.

In the Phelps era, Drake lived and died by the 3-point shot....Drake didn't even attempt a 3-pointer until 13 minutes into the game. This team can still shoot the 3 (9-15 for the game), but are not dependent on it.

Yeah, should have phrased that better, but I didn't ask about newcomers either. Hawley was the guy I was thinking of-left the team (dropped by Phelps or whatever) and now back.

Having a decent back-up/co-player for Van Deest could be big, Drake has always seemed to be alright with guards but eaten up inside.

Starting to feel really bad for Seth VanDeest. Dude just can't stay healthy.

My only question for Drake fans is if you think injuries have made it hard for him to stay in shape or if he doesn't really stay in shape which leads to injuries. Chicken and Egg I guess...

His original injury sophomore season was a shoulder injury (which caused him to miss his junior season), so that definitely came first. When he sat out the season, he put on a lot of weight. After that, he's been unable to do a lot of conditioning due to foot and knee injuries.....which potentially were partly due to the increased weight. So, hard to say which came first (other than the shoulder injury).

But, you're right; the guy can't catch a break....he's had only 1 healthy season out of 5.

FWIW, in the post-game press conference, Giacoletti said that Van Deest was looking real good prior to injuring his back a week ago. I'm hoping this back injury doesn't slow him down for too long.
