OT: Altman and Oregon have new $41M athletic student center

I think most MVC schools would like having a booster with the pockets of Phil Knight.

mvcfans - appreciate how you gave props to the legitimate media source for this story. have seen others fail in this respect

To the people of Eugene- your welcome, I am glad I can help cause facility upgrades are the second most important to recruiting (rivals boards being number 1)

I would not be surprised if the center, as nice as it is, has minimal bearing on recruiting. Don't get me wrong I would take that center at Creighton in a hearbeat. I just think the center will be way down on the list compared to playing time and a player hoping to get to the next level.

I tend to agree with blueblood that this kind of thing won't have a huge impact on recruiting in and of itself. It'll be a nice facility to have, could be great for players once they do recruit, etc., but it isn't likely to be a huge factor in swaying a recruit to choose Oregon over another school.

What I do think it does, though, is add one more little further bit of pressure to Altman and his staff's need to produce results quickly. I just don't see Knight ... I mean, the administration at Oregon ... sitting by idly and content if that staff fails to make some pretty big strides pretty quickly. I think Altman probably gets a pass for this coming season, but after that, I think he's going to have to produce some notable improvement and results pretty quickly.

I honestly hope Altman does well there. But I just don't see it happening. He built his legacy at Creighton on the heels of being able to recruit kids who would outwork the opponents, maximize their individual potential, and play hard fundamental basketball. The last few years -- at least since his return from Arkansas -- he seemed to start reaching for more talented players with less overall work ethic, and he just never really seemed to know what to do to get them to perform consistently and to their potential. He also displayed a real stubbornness to stick to his gameplan and strategy, regardless of how the games were going and what was going on. He'll have access to even more "talented" athletes at Oregon, access to even more resources and facilities, but will he be able to find a way to get the most of those athletes? Given what seemed to happen with some of the more talented athletes he got at Creighton down the stretch, I'm doubtful.

Most BCS teams would love to have a Phil Knight.

Things are getting ugly for Altman in Oregon. Only 9 scholarship players, eligibility issues, and who knows what else is coming.

Nine scholarship players? And we thought Evansville's program was shorthanded.

From Gary Parrish:

Is Dana Altman the unluckiest coach in the world?

It's starting to seem like it, isn't it? Dude took the Arkansas job in 2007, found out it was a mess and went back to Creighton to avoid dealing with that mess. Then he took the Oregon job last April and now the Ducks are being investigated for major violations that might've happened under former coach Ernie Kent, which has led to Altman entering his first season with just nine scholarship players because Michael Dunigan -- who is at the center of the investigation -- has left school to, presumably, escape the NCAA's wrath.

It's like Altman keeps walking into trap doors.

Unreal.

But the man is making millions of dollars to do it.

So I would still trade spots with him, I think.
