MVC Should Get In on The Alliance

East Tennessee State of the SOCON is joining the Mark Adams Scheduling Alliance which will provide cost-effective metrics-boosting challenge games to mid-majors. In 2020, it will transition to an MTE-like format. I think the MVC should get in on this especially if it can also secure side agreements with leagues like the A10 and MWC to do full-scale conference challenges as well.

I am intersted to see how this develops. At first glance, it looks a lot like Bracket Busters except it doesn't interfere with league play. With one or two exceptions, I'm not sure that event really had a material impact on the Valley getting teams into the NCAA tournament. While the idea of matching up non-power conference NCAA caliber teams is something we should all support, I am skeptical that it will help the participants very much.

Top tier mids playing each other just gives one of those teams another loss to be used to keep them out.

It gives the other team a better chance though. It doesn't matter about the loss because you have to assume you're a one bid league anyway and assume there is only 2, maybe 3 at large spots for mod-majors. This gives the winner of the bracket buster game 2 chances to get in rather than 1. If you lose you still have that one chance. You lose nothing by losing except the game. But, you gain something by winning.

Just win baby. Win or shut up.

The alliance seems like a good idea, however what I think the MVC should really look at is flexible conference scheduling, where the first 14 games determine seeding for the last four, and your top teams play each other in that last four. I know I’m not describing that totally accurately, but that’s the idea. Have your top teams play each other and not the bottom of the league. Perhaps gives them additional chances at those coveted Q1 and Q2 games.

Why not do both? Seems like a good idea to me. We’ve got to fight the P5 with the tools we have instead of doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Of course, the MVC is really good at that.
