Congrats to Morant.

Got me thinking. Has the MVC ever had a player drafted that high? I’m guessing Larry Bird. I heard Bird was offered a contract a year early, but was that done via a draft pick? Anybody else? I’m too lazy to look it all up in google and would rather have a small discussion anyways. :)

1951 Gene Melchiorre (Bradley), 1972 LaRue Martin (Loyola), and 1973 Doug Collins (Illinois State) all went first overall in their drafts.

Larry Bird was taken with the sixth pick overall.

Doug Collins was a #1 pick?? No way!! That’s awesome.
By chance, would you know where Frazier was pick at?

5th in 1967. Jerry Sloan of Evansville went 4th in 1965.

The most recent pick in the top 10 was probably Patrick O'Bryant at pick number 9 in 2006. He was pretty much a bust in the NBA, but probably the only top 10 pick from the Valley this century.

Collins and LaRue Martin were #1 picks.....but their teams weren’t in the MVC at the time. Same with Walt Frazier. Wes Unseld was the 2nd pick in the draft when Louisville was in MVC. Benoit Benjamin and Xavier McDaniel went #3 and #4 in the same year.

Murray State can find players and coaches. Always competitive. Morant, Payne, Canaan all in the last six years.

Bird undoubtedly would have been a #1 but he was picked a year early.
