Art Hains in need of prayers

Postby tdawgs87 » September 22nd, 2022, 4:27 pm

Art Hains the longtime voice of the Missouri State bears needs the prayers of the Valley community. I just read that he is in critical condition in a Springfield hospital and the family is asking for continued prayers. I am a Salukifan but I have listened to Mr. Hains on several occasions, and he is a great announcer and by all accounts a great guy so please keep him in your prayers.

He’s one of the best! Well wishes to him.

Legendary Missouri State University radio broadcaster Art Hains remains hospitalized in critical condition, but the family said Sunday doctors now believe Hains contracted West Nile virus.

Sunday Update:

Hains, 66, was hospitalized this past week and placed on a ventilator after experiencing pain in his leg that quickly devolved into Hains losing mobility and struggling to breathe.

Doctors initially thought Hains was suffering from an immune system disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome, but the family said Sunday that Hains' new diagnosis is West Nile, the mosquito-borne disease that can cause serious illness. In Hains' case, doctors believe West Nile has caused acute flaccid paralysis, according to the family.

"He is in critical condition and we are wanting to get him into a specialized research hospital that sees this type of issue more frequently and may have different treatment options," Hains’s son, Chris, sent in a text Sunday to News-Leader sports reporter Wyatt Wheeler, who is Hains’s radio show co-host. "This would additionally allow for a second opinion and additional testing. KU Med is the preferred location and Cox is ready to transport. We still need prayers and appreciate all the prayers offered during this trying week!"

Monday afternoon update:

Transport to KC Med went well. Met with the KU Med team today and they agree on West Nile and are focused on critical care

Can't move but opened his eyes on command a little. Not sure how aware he is.

Better day today than yesterday.

10/3 Art update

Just put in a feeding port so there are no more tubes down his throat. Mental part is improving. Brain scans looking more normal. Good day.

His son Chris showed him the MSU hoops video last night and he had a tear in his eye. Had the Chiefs game on.

Long way to go for motor skills to get back to where they should be. Can only do some hand squeezes right now. Hoping to beat pneumonia in the next few days.

Family's encouraged by the progress. Keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.
