Attended SIU-Valpo last night. First off, no band or mascot and hardly any students (outside of some football players) for Valpo ... they are not doing much to turn around the perception that they aren't an MVC-caliber program.
As far as the Salukis, thrilled at this dramatic turnaround. I don't remember many seasons over the years with this much improvement shown over the course of the year. Of course, they haven't been 0-5 in the MVC and looking like dead men walking as a starting point many seasons.
After the low point of back-to-back uncompetitive losses to Evansville and Illinois State, Nagy said he still thinks SIU can be a team nobody wants to play late in the year, and at the time it seemed like an eye-rolling comment, but I will say they have found that competitive gear where, if they can sustain it, they will be a tough out in St. Louis. Davis, Dibba and Hensley are all scoring at a pretty good clip, but it's the role players who have made a big difference lately: Mayo finally playing like the junkyard dog we thought we were getting, Sharp giving great energy off the bench at PG, and most shockingly, 6-10 Jorge Moreno giving excellent minutes these past couple games after getting in better shape and working his way into the rotation.
My new goal for the year is to get up to 7th place and avoid the dreaded 8-9 noon game on Thursday in St. Louis, but that will be difficult ... probably will require finishing ahead of Mo State, Valpo, Indiana State, Evansville and either Illinois State or Murray (the latter three each won the first meeting against Southern).
