The President didn't open pandora's box, technically the board of regents asked for a study. And they all seemed satisfied with the answer that UNI will not be a self sustaining athletic program anytime soon (like 90% of the rest of Division 1). The vote was unanimous with nothing but positive comments. Could the state cut the budget? Sure, but that could happen in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, or Indiana as well. Everyone involved agrees that UNI needs to keep it's D-1 program to maintain it's identity. And while the Football team is going to start playing a second BCS opponent once in a while to help break even, we weren't the first MVFC school to have to go that route -- ahem.

I think recruiting has gone well the past couple of years, despite these stories (and wild exaggerations). I guess we will find out if that's true when some of these guys actually see significant minutes this season.

Serious question....what happens when the BCS schools drop their "buy" games payments about 25-50% to FBS schools? How much would that hurt (if any)?

I know everyone sees the BCS games as reaching into your coat on the first cold day of the year and finding a wad of cash, but I have to think at some point they are going to trim their budgets too....and this is going to be one of the first places to see cuts.

I'm not sure that there have really been many "wild exaggerations." When people talk about the situation, they usually just say the same thing your AD said. When I brought up the AD's comments a few months back, several UNI posters, including you Panther99, said that they didn't remember those comments and accused me of making the whole thing up. Now, it is quite obvious that I what I said was true. That doesn't sound like "wild exaggerations" to me. More like a case of selective memory on the case of UNI fans.

As to other FBS schools having similar money woes, I absolutely believe that to be true as FBS FB as a whole seems to be an incredible drain on the financial resources of an athletic department. That being said, there is only one AD that made the drop to D2 comments publicly, and that was yours.

UNI has gone the route of taking the "steady money," mostly from in state schools. Others go out in search of high six figure payouts, but the Panther's approach has been to stick to Iowa, Iowa State, and other close schools as much as possible. We have long term deals locked in with both schools with gradual increases in the payout.

DJA- Maybe "wild" was a bit strong, but there has definitely been an exaggeration of how dire UNI's situation was/is. I'd love to continue this discussion over a few beers sometime. Maybe we can meet up in each other's area's luxury suites this season.

The inability for some to comprehend this story is staggering. All the articles on this are still out there, so feel free to read back up on them. If you are unable to understand the context and meaning of any of the comments from the AD and Pres, fine. I guess you are free to interpret it however you would like. But UNI is not going anywhere, and never was going anywhere.

:D I can't afford a luxury suite at the Qwest ...err CenturyLink.

The good news though is that when I was at the last Creighton game at UNI, I literally walked right into a UNI "luxury" box without having to show a ticket and with Creighton gear on and nobody said a word! There wasn't even anybody manning the door! With this year's game at UNI on a weekend, we may be able to do that part of your plan. :buddies:

Really DJA? You simply walked up stairs and waltzed right into one of the private suites and watched the game at UNI? And apparently there was no security, no ticket checkers, and nobody cared that you were sitting in their suite.

Yeah, that sounds legit.

Champ, you obviously have a lot more faith in the UNI ticket and game operations staff than I do. :?
