By "already doing" do you mean 5 or 6 times in the last 10 seasons? Also, for instance, Rice and Providence aren't top 25 RPI teams.

It's not enough to try and schedule decent when you expect to be good. You need to schedule when you aren't expecting to be good, and many schools are guilty of this far too often.

You can't always control who plays in these events, but it gives you the chance to face big-six conference schools. In addition to Providence, we already play Iowa and Iowa State. Additionally we play at #23RPI Old Dominion and at #53RPI St. Mary's.

UNI has played in an exempt tournament every year of the McDermott/Jacobson era that it was possible as far as I can tell (I think the rule used to be different --- not allowing you to play in one every year).

The only rule is you couldn't play in the same tournament for 4 years I believe it was. They've never kept anyone from participating in one every year.

So Elgin is counting the "Dale Howard Classic" that Creighton is in a qualifying tourney? We are playing 2 cupcakes and Iowa as part of this "tourney." Luckily, I think next year we are in the 76 classic and back to playing real BCS teams.

Actually, under the rules you could only play in 2 exempt tournaments in a 4 year window. So you could not participate in one every year.

Try google.

Gone forever was the 6-year-old "two-in-four" rule that limited schools to two appearances per quadrennial in so-called "exempt" tournaments, which allowed up to four contests to count as a single regular-season game against a maximum of 28. In its place was the new concept of "multi-team events" (or MTE for short), which have much looser restrictions; schools can't play in the same multi-team event twice over a four-year period, but any school may now participate in a MTE every season if it so chooses.

Someone will surely correct me, but I don't believe Evansville has played in an MTE since Marty was hired. But, UE will probably take the money next year.

No. I mean that what difference is this going to make? If all of the MVC teams (9 of 10 this year) are already playing in MTE tourneys, how is mandating that everyone play in one going to really chance anything?

He wants teams to play quality tournaments, not just any tournament. This year 9 of 10 teams are in them because last year Elgin got a committment from all of the coaches to start playing in these.....now he just made it a rule. In past years, this hasn't been the case. More opportunity against better competition is a good thing when it comes to landing NCAA bids. It should be no surprise that any at-large bids the valley gets will be earned in the non-conference and they will be credited to playing and beating good teams in these tournaments.

This also means that ISU can't host the world vision tournament every year where we play 3 cupcakes. We actually have to find neutral court destinations.

If you haven't read it yet, on The MVC Report (http://www.mvcfans.com) I offered an alternative idea to the financial incentives discussed by Elgin - just give the earmarked money to the best schools to buy better games or incentivize home-home or neutral sites games with BCS teams. Set aside 5-10% of the NCAA payout each year and make an investment in upgrading schedules which should pay off in the long run.
