By "already doing" do you mean 5 or 6 times in the last 10 seasons? Also, for instance, Rice and Providence aren't top 25 RPI teams.
It's not enough to try and schedule decent when you expect to be good. You need to schedule when you aren't expecting to be good, and many schools are guilty of this far too often.
You can't always control who plays in these events, but it gives you the chance to face big-six conference schools. In addition to Providence, we already play Iowa and Iowa State. Additionally we play at #23RPI Old Dominion and at #53RPI St. Mary's.
UNI has played in an exempt tournament every year of the McDermott/Jacobson era that it was possible as far as I can tell (I think the rule used to be different --- not allowing you to play in one every year).
