The thread author listed the criteria:
1. Only coaches who's team they coached must currently be in the MVC.
2. They can either me deceased, currently coaching, or retired.

John Wooden makes both criteria. Allen and Iba do not. I checked the criteria twice before posting; that said, Wooden is #1.

If wooden meets the listed criteria then it would have to be him.

Arad McCutchan would have to be in consideration for second place. 515-313 record, 5 College Division Championships, and a spot in the Naismith Hall of Fame and College Basketball Hall of Fame.

These two warrant consideration:

Forddy Anderson, Bradley (coached at Drake immediately before)
Record at Bradley: 142-56 (.717), 28-8 (.778) MVC
Overall: 299-203 (.595); 41-17 (.706) in MVC at both Drake and Bradley.
Pluses: Ended 1950 and 1951 regular seasons as #1 team in the nation. Led program to 2 National Championship games. Later led Michigan State to the 1957 Final Four (his 3rd overall), losing to eventual champion North Carolina in 3OT. Coached 3 consensus All-Americans in Gene Melchiorre, Paul Unruh and Johnny Green (MSU).

Negatives:Point-shaving scandal occurred during his tenure and the program left the league with Drake following the Johnny Bright episode.

Chuck Orsborn, Bradley

Record at Bradley: 194-56 (.776); 82-39 MVC (.729)
Overall: 194-56 (.776)
Pluses: If he coached 1 more year would likely officially be Top 10 winningest coaches (by percentage) in NCAA history, 3 NIT Titles. Coached 2 consensus All-Americans in Bobby Joe Mason and 3-timer Chet Walker.

Negatives: Never won the MVC.

I think the implication is the coach should have at least coached in the MVC, as that is what the thread specifically asks: "Greatest Coach in MVC history?". Wooden coached at Indiana State, yes, but never in the MVC. (They were NAIB not NCAA)

Edit: In fact the thread creator even clarified that as a criteria in their 2nd post in the thread.

As for Phog and Iba, Kansas and Okie State (then A&M) were in the MVC when they coached those schools. Indiana State did not appear in the MVC until the late 1970's.

Squirrel has to be right. Anyone who believes that you can have a "Greatest Coach in MVC history" that never coached in the Missouri Valley Conference in his life is just plain "nuts".

Agree with squirrel too. The league doesn't even mention Wooden on their own list of great coaches so he's out.

How about a coach that while in the MVC for 12 years went:

284-89 overall
176-36 conference
8 conference titles
7 tourney titles
37-17 in postseason
14-10 in the NCAA Tourney
10 NCAA Tourneys/ 2NIT
1 NCAA Sweet 16
2 NCAA Final Fours
Already awarded the honor of top coach in the history of the MVC and a MVC Hall of Famer
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Cheryl Burnett? You'd get no argument from me if this is indeed the correct person. The finest coach in the history of our program in any sport and right up there with Tony La Russa and Hank Stram as the best coaches in the history of the state of Missouri.

Squirrel, spare me the history lesson as I am well versed on the subject. The fact that the criteria was changed after I answered is not my fault.

What kind of fascist regime is running this place?
