Northern Iowa's new faces:
Redshirts from this year:
Wes Washpun, 6'1" PG, So. Tennessee transfer who followed Cuonzo Martin. Iowa High School prep from Cedar Rapids. Will push Mitchell for quickest/fastest player on team. Needs to improve his outside shot but is a top-notch defender and distributor who will contribute immediately. AAU teammate of Tuttle.
Matt MacDougall, 6'4" SG, Fr. Walk-On from Cedar Rapids as well who will only see spot minutes. (is one of 6 players from the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area on next year's team-Morrison, Martino, Washpun, Bohannon, MacDougall, Morgan)
Newcomers-all true freshman:
Jeremy Morgan, 6'6" SG/SF, Gatorade Player of the Year from Iowa, chose UNI over Iowa State, Creighton, Drake and others. Was a two-sport star with football in HS but will concentrate on basketball only for the first time in college. Gives UNI a different kind of athlete than we have had, hopefully we will fully utilize him. Certainly putting Morgan, Washpun, Mitchell and Tuttle on the floor together would allow for a fast pace. Team won state championship in Iowa's largest class the last two years-undefeated.
Ted Friedman, 6'9" PF, Chose UNI over Drake and had interest from BCS schools. A post player similar to Tuttle and could use some weightroom work but may play right away with UNI being thin in the post.
Bennett Koch, 6'9" PF, the youngest of the Koch brothers, already at least as tall as Jake but built more lean like Adam. Discussion has been that he will red-shirt to put on weight, but again, UNI does not have a lot of height on the roster for next year.
Klint Carlson, 6'7" SF/PF, Rumored as a 4 for 5 player, has an inside-outside game with good athleticism and scrapiness similar to a taller Chip Rank. Led team to state title in Iowa's second-largest class, all-tournament captain.
Robert Knar, 6'1" SG, Described as a combo Johnny Moran/Ali Farohkmanesh type of long-range bomber. Missed most of senior season with an ACL injury but returned for end of year and play-offs. School's all-time leading scorer (same school that Ryan Sawvell is from)
UNI still has one scholarship available. It may just go to Carlson, they may try and bring someone in late, or they may just save it for a 2014 recruit.
A lot of new faces so I am kind of surprised/pleased that people still are giving UNI credit and putting them in the top half/top third for next year. Mitchell and Tuttle are a nice nucleus to build around though and I do trust Jake.
