Gant average 7.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg and shot 43% from the field.....I think it would be a huge leap for him to become a first team all MVC player.

Back to the actual subject of the thread.....

For Drake, there will probably be a total of 7 guys who didn't play last season:

Robert Puleikis, 6'10" freshman from Lithuania who sat out last season as a redshirt.

Karl Madison, starting point guard in 2011-12 who missed the entire 2012-13 season with injuries.

Jordan Daniels....transfer from Boston College, where he was the starting point guard as a freshman. He will be eligible at semester, and will have 2-1/2 years remaining.

Blake Danielak....6'8" freshman wing from Texas

Trevor Berkeley....6'7" juco transfer

Two yet to sign....hearing rumors of a couple other guys in the 6'6"-6'8" range.

Not so much meant to praise Gant but more as a knock at the league as a whole for next year. Who in the frontcourt stands out? He had his flashes of dominating play as a true soph. so its not too crazy to think he would be in the discussion for first team next year. Tuttle is above him in the frontcourt but I don't see any returning big guy other than him who I would take over Gant.

Here's some returners that were better last year (not including the already admitted as better Tuttle, Arop, and Odum):

Cleanthony Early - 14.5 and 5.2
Tyshon Pickett - 10.8 and 5.4
Seth Van Deest - 9.5 and 4.7
Christian Kirk - 9.0 and 4.0

And guards:

Walt Lemon Jr
Marcus Marshall
Deon Mitchell
Johnny Hill
Ron Baker

So, while Gant is a nice player with size, I put him fifth after the aforementioned three players that are already better and offer four guards that I see as better than Gant.

On my chart, Gant comes in as the 13th best returning player and no where close to first team. Also, I'd look for a player from Evansville to get a big statistical bump before I'd look to the third best Sycamore to be on the first team.

Guess I look at more than numbers when judging all valley talent. Your probably right being on a team with ODum and Arop he wont put up the numbers necessary to be first team but talent wise I'd take him over any of those frontcourt players you listed. Tuttle is the only returning big guy i'd rather have.

best 5 players returning regardless of position

1. Early
2. Odum
3. Walt Lemon Jr.
4. Tuttle
5. Marshall

Back to the question. Missouri State just landed a 5th year transfer so if there is any MSU fans who want to break down all their incoming pieces i'd be interested to hear from them. They are the only team outside of ISU-B and UNI that looks to be close to competing for a top spot next year.

Getting Gulley back 100% healthy will be one of the biggest additions for Missouri St. He was a 10pt 6rb guy his first year in the Valley and looked great last summer before he got hurt. As far as additions go...

6'7" Emmanuel Addo - 1yr guy who only averaged 5pts 2rbs as a junior but averaged 10pts 4rbs as a soph. His size and experience alone will help us but I have a feeling he is going to contribute.
6'5" Ronito Mvouika - juco who averaged 19pts 8rbs 3ast per game...was a VA Tech commit out of prep school but hurt his back. Stat stuffer wing like Mallett but a better shooter...made 54 treys as a soph and shot 39% from three.
6'3" Austin Ruder - high school shooting guard and on the Rivals list of top 10 deep shooters in the country. Averaged 22pts 6rbs 4ast per game and is just a tough kid...high release point, quick shot and plays hard. We needed shooters and we got a good one.
6' Devon Thomas - prep school lefty point guard that is ultra quick and very athletic. Played on a very good prep school team with a top 10 2014 recruit and Danny Ainge's son. Averaged 14pts 4rbs 6ast. Have heard some talk that he will start from day 1.
6'10" Tyler McCollough - high school center who is already around 250lbs. Played on a very good high school team in Arkansas that was 7A state runner up. Watched him play a few times and was impressed with his hands and how well he moved...needs some work on his offensive game but most frosh bigs who come to the Valley do.

Northern Iowa's new faces:

Redshirts from this year:

Wes Washpun, 6'1" PG, So. Tennessee transfer who followed Cuonzo Martin. Iowa High School prep from Cedar Rapids. Will push Mitchell for quickest/fastest player on team. Needs to improve his outside shot but is a top-notch defender and distributor who will contribute immediately. AAU teammate of Tuttle.

Matt MacDougall, 6'4" SG, Fr. Walk-On from Cedar Rapids as well who will only see spot minutes. (is one of 6 players from the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area on next year's team-Morrison, Martino, Washpun, Bohannon, MacDougall, Morgan)

Newcomers-all true freshman:

Jeremy Morgan, 6'6" SG/SF, Gatorade Player of the Year from Iowa, chose UNI over Iowa State, Creighton, Drake and others. Was a two-sport star with football in HS but will concentrate on basketball only for the first time in college. Gives UNI a different kind of athlete than we have had, hopefully we will fully utilize him. Certainly putting Morgan, Washpun, Mitchell and Tuttle on the floor together would allow for a fast pace. Team won state championship in Iowa's largest class the last two years-undefeated.

Ted Friedman, 6'9" PF, Chose UNI over Drake and had interest from BCS schools. A post player similar to Tuttle and could use some weightroom work but may play right away with UNI being thin in the post.

Bennett Koch, 6'9" PF, the youngest of the Koch brothers, already at least as tall as Jake but built more lean like Adam. Discussion has been that he will red-shirt to put on weight, but again, UNI does not have a lot of height on the roster for next year.

Klint Carlson, 6'7" SF/PF, Rumored as a 4 for 5 player, has an inside-outside game with good athleticism and scrapiness similar to a taller Chip Rank. Led team to state title in Iowa's second-largest class, all-tournament captain.

Robert Knar, 6'1" SG, Described as a combo Johnny Moran/Ali Farohkmanesh type of long-range bomber. Missed most of senior season with an ACL injury but returned for end of year and play-offs. School's all-time leading scorer (same school that Ryan Sawvell is from)

UNI still has one scholarship available. It may just go to Carlson, they may try and bring someone in late, or they may just save it for a 2014 recruit.

A lot of new faces so I am kind of surprised/pleased that people still are giving UNI credit and putting them in the top half/top third for next year. Mitchell and Tuttle are a nice nucleus to build around though and I do trust Jake.

So far for SIU.

Sean O'Brien, K.C Goodwin, Tyler Smithpeters, Mike Balogun, Hunter Gibson, Bronson Verhines, and Dawson Verhines.

Of the bunch, only Sean O'Brien is likely to have any sort of impact in the short term. Maybe K.C Goodwin and Smithpeters will develop into something 2-3 years from now, but overall, there's not a whole lot of reason to expect much out of this group of newcomers.

Cleanthony Early plays most of his minutes at the 4, for the record. The rest at the 3. I'm not sure why you keep leaving him out of your frontcourt list but are listing him as the best returning player regardless of position ;)
