I'd guess that stretch of the last 11 games?

As a freshmen, his numbers did improve considerably over the course of the season. That's what you want to see.

Exactly what rlh said. He was stuck behind Payne who ended up hurt and out at LU.

The point is that he continued to improve to the point where, when he was starting, he was an outstanding player.

I watched Keke play extensively during his time at Manual.
I'm good friends with a few of his high school coaches.
Great player. Even better kid. Excited to watch him!

I'd put Odum at the top. He's got great size and versatility. I'd put Lemon right below him but he is a bit inconsistent and seems to play a little out of control at times.

If Marcus Marshall improves his strength and outside shooting % over the summer I could see him close to the top this year. He's a hard worker and I would bet he does just that.

I thought Van Fleet showed pretty good potential but his limited playing time made it difficult to see just what he's capable of.

Baker is the WSU guard that really impresses me. Off the chart basketball IQ, good size, etc, etc. I know he's more of a combo guard and so is M Marshall but both will see a lot of time at the point and barring injury may possibly be the 2 best guards in the conference THIS year.

Aces have two solid freshmen PGs

Duane Gibson- Cleveland, Oh prep player of the year

Jaylon Brown - Fishers, In, to quote Marty, one of the most athletic players to play for UE

can't wait to see these two split the point for UE

Lemon might be moved to the 2 next year. Bradley brought in a soph true PG transfer from Wake Forest, and Lemon was kind of forced into the combo role a couple years ago out of necessity because Maniscalco left. Walt has more turnovers than your average PG so giving him less ballhandling duties may be the right move.

Ford speculated a few days ago in the PJStar though that Fields and Lemon would share PG duties, but it sounds like he hasn't made a decision yet. That might not be a bad idea. He does have some PG skills now and you do want the ball in his hands more than your average SG.

This is a great arguement, one thing about Odom is that he's been the face of that team for four years. He's definitley a true point guard. Lemon's only played point two years at Bradley, and has done a solid job. Lemon's more exciting for sure. And for Marshall, he played well last year, but I don't see how Marshall is ahead of Van Vleet, he played way above his years in the tourney

I'm going with Odum without a doubt or question.

If Lemon plays a lot of PG this year, he'd have to be my second pick.

At that point, I'd go with VanVleet, who may be better than 3rd, but he hasn't shown it in league play yet. Lemon and (definitely) Odum have shown it.

I watched every AAU game VanVleet played between his Jr. and Sr. seasons in HS. I watched him against the #1, #3, and #5 PG's in HS ball that year. I didn't see much of what I knew VanVleet could do in league play this year. At that stage of the season, VanVleet looked like he was playing "safe" and concentrating more on not making mistakes than taking some risks to do what he can do.

I saw more of what I'd seen VanVleet do in AAU ball in the tourney. It's a completely different thing to make plays against guys your age (AAU and HS ball) than it is to play D1 as a Fr against upper classmen, so I wasn't convinced VanVleet could bring his AAU or HS game to the D1 level for a couple of years.

VanVleet brought it against some outstanding opponents in the NCAA's. He was still the second guy and the weight of the team wasn't on his shoulders. VanVleet is going to have to figure out how to handle the next level this year. If he can do that without blinking, he could possibly reach Odum's level this year.

Odum did that without blinking during his Fr year and did it earlier than VanVleet did it, but Odum wasn't playing behind a PG that got a bunch of looks from the NBA.

Puts him at about 7th best in the league...

Wouldn't be too concerned about what other teams posters think at this point. Mitchell has the experience and talent to be one of the better guards in the Valley, so it just comes down to who is consistent and what teams jell come MVC play. I think things will look a lot different come March than most people think right now as there any number of teams that could go either way this year. Lots of new or semi new coaches, young players, and emerging sophs and juniors. Might not be a great year for the Valley strength wise, but should be fascinating from a fan perspective.

Wufan wrote:The UNI thread got me thinking. Who is the best PG in the MVC next year? I was going to do a poll, but I felt that there would be too much biased for one's own PG, so let's here who the best PG is. Lots of good options. Here's the list, and please correct me if I'm wrong.:

Bradley: Walt Lemon Jr
Drake: Richard Carter
Evansville: No idea
Illinois State: Kaza Keane
Indiana State: Jake Odum
Loyola: Keke White
Missouri State: Marcus Marshall
Northern Iowa: Deon Mitchell
Southern Illinois: Anthony Beane
Wichita State: Fred VanVleet

Stats thus far (PPG, A/TO, Reb, stl):

Lemon, Sr BU - 16.0, 4.2/3.5, 4.0, 1.7
Carter, Sr DU - 23.3, 2.3/2.3, 3.7, 2.3
Gibson, Fr UE - 13.8, 6.0/2.5, 6.3, 0.5
Lee (?), Fr ISUr - 8.5, 3.0/3.3, 2.0, 2.3
Odum, Sr ISUb - 14.5, 5.0/2.3, 4.8, 1.5
White, So LUC - 14.2, 2.8/2.8, 4.0, 1.6
Marshall, So MSU - 15.7, 3.0/1.7, 4.0, 0.0
Mitchell, Jr, UNI - 14.8, 3.0/1.8, 1.3, 0.8
Fillyaw, Jr SIU - 7.8, 2.3/1.5, 2.8, 0.5
VanVleet, So WSU - 14.6, 5.8/1.8, 3.2, 2.8

Biggest surprise in this group in Duane Gibson of Evansville putting up some monster stats (leading all PGs in assist and boards) - and no one is talking about him.
Second biggest surprise is that Lemon and Odum aren't dominating the group.

Gibson (2.4:1), Odum (2.2:1), and VanVleet (3.2:1) all sporting impressive A:TO ratio as well.
