I’d argue that refs should never engage fans unless the fans come onto the court. If you don’t like people questioning your calls, you aren’t cut out to be a ref. It’s an occupational hazard. Deal with the on the court stuff and ignore fans who yell at you. It’s all a part of the game.

Damn, the refs have gotten thin skinned today.

Pollard has always been a well criticized official on this site and in the arenas he works. Heimerman was part of the Drake/UE crew last week that called 3 terrible moving screens in the 1st four plus minutes against UE.
I'm puzzled by the statement that the coaches have a say in the officials the league uses. Explanation?

Coaches send evaluations to the league on all three officials after every game. If they didn't receive consistently good marks, they wouldn't be back. There's a reason that Pollard, Janssen, Higgins, Eades, etc do the Valley whenever the Big 12 hasn't scooped then up. They grade out very well.

I just have a hard time believing the coaches endorse Pollard. He is in their face every game, actively slows the game down with useless monitor reviews, and has been disrespectful to players on the court when they ask him a question. I have less of a problem with the others mentioned except Janssen, who gave Muller a T against Bradley for waving his hands in the air from the other side of the court. Here's the thing about an official, if you are a good one, no one should know your name. It's unfair, but its the way it works. They are always going to piss someone off but they need to understand no one is there to see them. Pollard does not understand this. Watch his theatrics with his block-charges or just his general on-court demeanor. I would be happy if I never saw him again in the MVC. I know its not going to happen but, it'd be nice.

I don't get it either. Pollard is the definition of a refshow. If he doesn't give a technical he'll definitely call something goofy like a 5-second inbounds. You can see it coming.

5 second calls do happen though. We saw one last Saturday during our home game against Drake.

True! But he was the one who called a 5 seconds in the last 30 seconds of a 20 point Loyola Valpo game. He also happened to whistle on the catch... after the ball was thrown. Just a weird power move.

Officials (all of them) make calls we can't stand. We have as good a bunch of referees as there is anywhere no matter how bad they are. The talk of "MVC refs" is just nonsense. We get well respected officials who make bad calls just like the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, etc. Most of "our" refs do all those leagues as much as ours.

I'd argue people who complain about officiating are piles of that

ValleyFAN, this isn’t just a Valpo issue.

If you want just one of the many missed calls from last nights game, here you go: https://twitter.com/valpo_hoops/status/ ... 35936?s=21

They are tired of the non-stop abuse, but you are correct that they should not engage.
