I can support that; Freeman is an impact defensive player. Krek worked hard and accepted a lot of tough assignments, but that didn't make him a top level defender. In fact the best defender for the Bears was Webster by far. But Freeman definitely deserved his spot.
By far? I disagree I saw the 3 starting guards(Webster, Dixon and Krek) darn near on a equal plane as far as defense. I didnt see any of them be torched just like Freeman didnt but I saw Krek take on much tougher assignments then Freeman. Well I guess its happened already. We all got opinions lol
Webster was second in steals and led the team in blocked shots, but apart from stats, just look at the games players like Brown,Barnes, Custer etc had against the Bears with Webster being the primary defender. His length was really difficult for a number of pgs to deal with. When the game was on the line at Loyola, Ford switched Webster onto Townes to defend the pick and roll that had been killing the Bears and Webster blocked the shot. After Ellingson had torched the Bears at Drake, Ford put Webster on him the last game and Webster held him down . In the games against UNI Webster blocked Green's 1st attempt both games, and Green didn't really score much till Webster had to sit with fouls; the minute Webster was out, UNI went to Green and he scored on consecutive possessions with Krek on him.
I admire Krek for taking the assignments against guys like Yarborough and Townes and he fought his butt off, which is a big part of defense, but he wasn't nearly as effective as Webster imho[ Yarborough averaged 22.5ppg and Townes 17.5 against the Bears] Now those guys score most nights, but so do guys like Brown .
The Bear is the largest carnivore on the North American continent; beware the Bear!
