Don’t be so sure Indiana is out. I’ll believe that after the Selection Show and I don’t see Indiana’s ugly ass name in the brackets...

My issue with these "play in/elmination games" that are often the 8/9 games in a Power 5 league (Clemson-NC State, Ohio State-Indiana) is that the winner gets credit for beating a team not in the tournament while getting the schedule boost by getting Virginia/Michigan State the next day.

Looking at those two games, Clemson was up 16 at halftime and lost the lead. Meanwhile Ohio State was up 20 with about 7:00 left and the final margin was 4. Dirty little secret time, someone has to win those games, both teams cannot lose. To me it says a lot about those four teams with how those games played out. Had either dominated, take the first 33 minutes of the Ohio State performance only it would be a really solid victory, something to bolster a resume.

If NC State can make the field with a terrible non-con with all games against anybody decent in an event while playing no true road games that you scheduled. (Wisconsin B1G/ACC Challenge, Penn State and Auburn in Atlantic City, and a stretch here but winless Vandy in Miami, FL) Then you say we went 9-9 in the ACC with your best wins being Syracuse and Clemson (home, neutral) you are saying that that beating Penn State (NIT??), and wins over Auburn and Syracuse is enough to sit at home all non-con unchallenged. That November/December doesn't really matter......when you are a Power 5, you can make your schedule what you want it to be.

This is the same school that bought out Loyola last year, didn't return that game because they were too good (but congrats on the foresight to be correct on that fact). If you're going to penalize small leagues for not challenging themselves, "who did you beat, etc" then throw the book at the cowards who sit at home and pay their way out of an obligation, even if it was last year. Don't like it, play somebody because the ball is surely in your court, you play in the mighty ACC remember???

A big reason why NC State has a NET of 32 is because they beat...

Western Carolina (295) by 33
Mt St Mary's (336) by 50
UMES (352) by 46
St Peter's (317) by 28
SC Upstate (344) by 27
Loyola MD (280) by 33
UNCA (350) by 51

NC State’s NC SOS ranks 353rd (of 353). Last year, the Wolfpack paid $175k to not play a Final 4 team.

I feel like you could say that about half the power 5 teams right now...

You have no idea how much it rubs me the wrong way that Kelvin Sampson is having so much success at Houston. I mean, I loved him when he was at IU until he destroyed the program, but the fact that he's winning so much after leaving a wake of scandals everywhere else he went is so frustrating.

I thought I'd be less mad at NC State after the way last season ended, but they are reaching Syracuse levels of system-gaming. I heard their coach after they won Wednesday saying they should be in because if you go 9-9 in the ACC it shouldn't even be a question. Which... ok. Nine wins in the ACC sounds kind of impressive until you realize that there are five teams in the ACC that really aren't that good... and NC State played the second easiest schedule in the conference. So, yeah. Still salty, I guess. Keep them out!

NC State and Clemson have no business even being considered for the tournament.

Non-conference SOS doesn’t matter when mid-major teams are closed out of meaningful opportunities to play major conference teams. This is the playbook of the major conference teams and since power conferences are bigger and conference games are being played earlier in the season, both the real and perceived importance of non-con games are diminished.

The NCAA and power conference teams are not just businesses, they are monopolies.

NC State is an extreme case of a team taking advantage of the NET. Their RPI rank right now is #98, which would put them well beyond the bubble.

NC State played 6 games against the bottom 50 teams in KenPom. Let's suppose they swap Maryland-Eastern Shore with Indiana State and UNC Asheville with IUPUI. That raises their NCSOS rank to 48 spots to #305, one spot above Michigan, and also better than five ACC teams (ND, Wake, Va. Tech, BC, and Pitt)

I'm not sure, however, that making this swap helps NC State in any way. Their critics will still call their schedule weak, because the 8th place team in the MVC/7th place team in the Horizon is still pretty bad. Their fans still don't get to see any big name programs in Raleigh outside of the ACC. And presumably the costs to buy ISUb are higher than buying Maryland-Eastern Shore.
