FACTS: Henderson played in 19 of 21 games prior to his season ending injury. He averaged 8.7 minutes a game and 2.7 points. The first game Lickliter coached he played 22 and scored 6 points. The second game he played 3 minutes in the first half not scoring and not re-entering the game. He did not play again for the remaining 11 games of the season.

The concern that transfers kill mid majors just isn't really true. The MVC has benefitted way more from transfers than has been hurt the last few seasons.

Some of these players are just stupid, bouncing 2-3 times over a couple years. And if I'm a coach I'm not blinded by whatever talent they have, because their m o says it's all about me . You can't develop cohesion and chemistry with guys like that. Believe me we saw it first hand at MSU last year. Not saying all transfers are bad, but buyer beware with some of these guys who simply can't deal with adversity and competition and bolt every time they aren't getting what they want.

Leave Sam Cunliffe alone! :P

I'd say not more than 1-2 transfers per year as a general rule. The term is probably overused but there's something to be said for "culture" as Wardle calls it. They should want to adapt instead of the other way around.

This was the situation the year Valpo had all of their transfers. Some of those guys simply did not fit into a team culture and were not willing to play team basketball. You see how much better we were even with a team full of freshmen and sophomores this year. It's because we got a bunch of unselfish players who bought in. It's essential to team building especially at our level.

I’d agree, generally. The “transfer portal” is like programmed trading and market makers in stock exchanges in the sense that they provide liquidity (not that it isn’t without problems in both markets).

Understanding it is still early- though it feels like the season ended three months ago- I'm a little surprised we haven't heard anything out of what has been "transfer U" the last decade or so with the Redbirds. We're currently over 1 scholarship with the addition of JUCO transfer Alex Kotov, who will have 3 years and is a stretch 4 type of player. I'm guessing the lack of news has something to do with all Illinois schools being shut down and which threw off Muller's post-season meeting schedule.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a player or two go the Madison Williams retirement route. It certainly doesn't feel like we'll be having 3-6 transfers this season like in seasons past. This past season was really bad but the guys returning are really likeable. Excited about the direction and new types of players Blecher and co are recruiting.

And I get my answer on how the Birds get back to 0 scholarships. Rey Idowu enters the portal. He showed a lot of promise and started at the beginning of season but as the season went on he didn’t progress in the way anyone hoped. He was the first “true 5” at ISU in years. Fans were really excited about his size, but his defensive foot speed needed work. Fans had hoped for the Dinma Odiokosa comp. but it didn’t work out.

Best of luck to Rey. Great character guy and represented the program well during his time.
