Agree. I will have no trouble pulling for them in the NCAA tourney. Sure would be nice if they lost in StL and didn't take an auto bid with them.

As a UIC fan I am livid. That is an awful thing to do to the student-athletes that are competing for UIC and for the Horizon League right now. And not to get into specifics, but the baseball and softball team are annually at the top of the Horizon League conference and you're looking at them and saying that no matter what they do it is all for naught.

Pathetic. To the seniors on all winter and spring sports, it is a petty and childish decision made by the adults involved.

I am happy for so many reasons to be getting out of this awful league and this is just adding to that!

I am sure the Horizon is saying it is UIC who is punishing their students by announcing this mid-season.

They will say this while ignoring what they did to Butler years ago. Butler announced they were leaving a year in advance as the bylaws require. What happened? The HL banned them from postseason for their entire last season! So Butler just left for the A10 immediately. So no matter when UIC announced, they likely would’ve been banned. The only thing they could have done was wait until spring season ended…then announce they were leaving in a month or two. That would’ve hampered the Horizon even more.

The league banned them from play because they violated the bylaws re notice. But what I want to know is whether the bylaws provided the league to cancel their postseason play. Where does that legal authority come from?

2.5.3 A member institution that elects to terminate League membership without complying with Section 2.5.1 shall automatically, in addition to being in Withdrawing Member Status, and except as specifically approved by the Board:

2.5.3.3 Be immediately ineligible to play in any post-season championship tournament associated with the League;

That underlined part is the key. The Board can approve to not enforce 2.5.3.3. They’re using the lack of adequate notice as an excuse so they don’t have to explain the fact that their choice is what is hurting the athletes.

The laws are the laws and the HL is not incorrect in their application…probably why we won’t see legal action…but it’s still a dick move…it’s revenge and that’s really all there is to it.
