No, but it does hurt the bottom line. What happens if Jake decides to leave and they need to hire a new coach? UNI has been lucky with Jake in that he doesn't leave for a higher paying job. Most coaches use a school that pays like UNI as a stepping stone which can really damage your program over time.

Jake signed a 10 year contract extension just a few days after leading one of the bigger upsets in recent history. I would say that speaks volumes about his desire to move on. We can speak in hypotheticals all day long, but the fact or the matter is 10, 100, 1000, or 10000 people in the stands, UNI continues to win.

You had 4015 for the Colorado St. game while school is in session! If the student section is full, where is everyone else? I feel like we may be beating a dead horse, but if UNI in the next couple of years isn't doing well in basketball, what is the attendance going to be then?

I'm glad you care so deeply.

The CSU game was a different story because on that same day at UNI we hosted a) a home playoff football game, b) NCAA volleyball tournament, and c) a very large wrestling tournament.

I care about this conference and when a school can't draw more than 4015 for a decent oponent, that should be setting off some alarms with the other schools.

I'm not here to make excuses, because I believe UNI games should be better attended. But this is how it works... General community fans tend not to show up at UNI basketball games in great numbers before the holidays, especially while the football team is still playing. And there is rarely a pep band until the second semester starts (apparently it's a one credit class associated with the spring semester). Starting in January, things pick up and the building seems to be full more than it isn't. There are exceptions, like this week's goofy game on a Friday night. It's hard to say how they will do. I won't be there, as I officiate high school basketball. Lots of other alums are involved in HS basketball, either through their kids or coaching (remember, we're just a teachers college after all :roll: ). I did manage to give away my tickets, so at least they won't go unused.

I purchased extra tickets for Creighton because it's on a weekend and my father-in-law to be is a Creighton grad. I'm guessing that game might set an attendance record for the McLeod.

If 4015 is setting off alarms, where were you 10 years ago when a similar opponent probably would draw about 800 in the UNI-Dome?

First of all, UNI pays coach Jake pretty well. I'd have to look up other coach's salaries, but I'd guess he is paid somewhere near the middle or upper third of the MVC.

Second of all, if a coach wanted to use a MVC school as a "stepping stone", he's going to do it regardless. This is not unique to UNI. Creighton, Wichita, UNI, and everyone else have all lost coaches to a bigger school, and most have dealt with it in the last decade.

What is the buyout for that contract? Turgeon signed a long extension in 06 and was gone in 07. Just because a contract is signed, doesn't mean they will be there for the whole contract.

I was never in favor of adding UNI when they were added to the Valley. They don't offer the fan support, but as of now they do offer competitive basketball. What worries me is the financial situation of the UNI athletic program as basketball should be funding most if not all of your other sports. Very few sports in college can provide enough money it generates to cover just that sports expenses.

There seems to pretty much be an excuse for every single game....

If I'm reading the posts in this thread correctly, the only way UNI can get a decent crowd is if:
(1) School is in session and students are in town;
(2) There isn't a UNI football game on the same day;
(3) There isn't a UNI volleyball game on the same day;
(4) There isn't a UNI rasslin' meet on the same day;
(5) The Iowa Hawkeyes don't have a football game that day;
(6) The Iowa Hawkeyes aren't playing someone other than UNI in basketball at the same time.

Just to be safe, we should probably add,
(5) Weather is really nice;
(6) There isn't a major fraternity function; and
(7) There isn't a major sorority function.

Did I miss anything?

Very true, but just because it happened to WSU doesn't mean it's going to happen elsewhere. If you want to keep playing what if's, does Turgeon bolt if WSU doesn't tank in 07?

UNI does more with less than anyone in the country. As a UE fan, I must say I'm a little envious of what they can do with a simliar sized budget. I think it would be pretty scary if UNI had the same budget as the WSU and Creighton's of the world.

If Creighton or Wichita St. fans made an excuse there was something else going on in the city the same day of a game there would be nobody at the game. People who support these two schools make it a priority to be at every game and if they can't make it they find someone to go. I grew up a WSU fan and with five kids, it is hard to make every game and to even watch every game on TV, but I work my schedule around it. Wish the same could be said in Cedar Falls as they have had a good team to support the last 5 years or so, but it doesn't seem like the community or school are paying attention.
