I am more of a Chicago Bears fan than anything else and they are in the process of hiring a GM and then a new head coach. They are asking permission of the other teams if they can talk to their personnel before inviting them to Chicago for an interview. Maybe this is the problem in that Muller didn't ask for permission?

From where I sit it seemed like a good move for Dana career wise. He was what about the 3rd assistant at WSU and at ISUr he was immediately assistant head coach and Dan Mullers lead assistant. If he had stayed at WSU he most likely would not be a head coach anywhere like he is now. I was disappointed when he left ISUr but was happy for him getting a shot at being a head coach. What's wrong with an individual bettering his situation? Also, Dana was returning to his alma mater.

I know I don't see both sides of the issue but I don't get it when folks get mad because someone wants to better themselves.

By the way, Dana Ford was not an assistant for Tim Jankovich.

That isn't really the issue. And I don't know how many fans are really wrapped up in not liking Ford. Seems like an up-and-comer. The issue is that Ford had given Marshall a verbal commitment to be an assistant at WSU for at least 2 years before moving on. When that didn't happen, Marshall wasn't pleased. And you can see the logic in both sides of that move: Marshall doesn't want a revolving door at assistant, too tough to keep recruits and continuity, and Ford had an opportunity to keep moving up that he didn't want to miss. I don't think I begrudge either one for their current positions on the matter.

I don't know if I believe that Ford wouldn't have a coaching gig yet, at a place at least comparable to TSU. Being an assistant, even a non top assistant, on a F4 team and an undefeated team, the PG for whom you recruited, with an endorsement from the NCOY will probably get you hired somewhere. The real shame is what happened between the coaching staffs in Normal, the real story to which we will probably never know.

You're right. Forgot that Ford was part of the new Muller staff. For some reason I thought he bridged the two.

I think the issue was strictly that Ford gave his word on staying with WSU for two seasons and left after one. If he'd left for IlSU after two seasons, WSU fans would have been fine with him taking a forward career move.

Although I somehow doubt two seasons at Illinois State as the assistant head coach for a team with a 53.7% win% was somehow instrumental in him becoming a head coach. He could have taken a head coach job at a team like Tennessee State, that he had a relationship already with, from where he was within WSU's staff as well. Granted, the increased responsibility was likely better for his overall development as a coach.

Dana brought Fred to Gregg.
He should get a statue.

A rivalry requires competition from both sides. Picking your team first and then playing the team that is coming off first still doesn't fit the bill either.

Often times, people use quotes to represent sarcasm in the printed language.

If "rivalry" is the only point of focus you could find in my message, you're beyond my level of help.

I'm not so certain he didn't ask Fred to come with him to Normal...he did ask Teddy. I think that was the issue. Marshall brought Dana in to recruit. He recruited for one year and at the end of it he wanted to take his guys with him.

Fred was already signed when Dana was hired by Muller. Why would Dana ask knowing his former boss would rather slice off his hand than give Fred a waiver to play someplace else in-conference?

Didn't Wichita cut ties with Teddy during his time at Quakerdale? I get the anger coming from the "2 year commitment" being broken, but what does Teddy have to do with that? Correct me if I'm wrong: Wichita didn't like that Teddy was essentially shopping himself around while at prep school. I recall an article where there seemed to be some mutual interest between Teddy and Ohio State, but offers wouldn't appear until his grades improved. They didn't, other offers never came, and Dana threw him a lifeline long after Teddy and Gregg said their last goodbyes.

Wufan, the story I heard isn't that Ford recruited Teddy but that he left on his own volition with his mother's encouragement. It seems that Marshall in his own unique winsome way said something and behaved towards Teddys' mother that pissed her off. I know it's hard to believe Marshall is capable of pissing anyone off (wink).

Hadn't heard that but I may have been off base in my presumptions as well.

jwa is crazy and has selective memory. WSU put Teddy in a prep program in Iowa to bring up his grades. (Teddy started shopping around for other schools (Ohio State and Iowa on his own dime and they didn't want him). Marshall then told Teddy that if he wanted to shop around, we weren't interested anymore. Before the First Semester even ended, Hawkins had quit the Prep School and went home. The coach who had tried to help Teddy during the early signing period, acted like Teddy didn't exist either.
