Paul Lusk was an issue. He could recruit pretty well, but was never a competent in game tactician... He never ran set plays to close games out, and we would often lose games in the final seconds. Coach Ford (At least up to this point) seems to be much of the same. I think he is a better recruiter, but again he even admits that he's not an X's and O's guy. We still have no plays or plans on how to close out tight games. I do think lack of chemistry did play a role in some of the woes this season, but if we had plans on how to close out games, we would probably be singing more praises for Ford. Missouri State has lost 8 games by 4 points or less points. They have only won 3 games by 4 or less.
The Bears overachieved last year by relying on chemistry from two 4 year guys, one high major transfer with high character, and a steady dose of feeding Tulio inside. They also switched to a fake motion offense because we didn't have enough depth on the bench. They were able to win enough games in a down year for the Valley to avoid Thursday. They also went in to St Louis on a bit of a losing streak once other teams got them figured out.
This year, I am not sure if the players bought too much in to the hype, and expected to out talent everyone, but the first game of the season should have been a wake up call for that. It took awhile to find a rotation that worked, and effort ticked up when they started seeing some positive results. That's why that egg they laid at Valpo was such a buzzkill. Valpo played faster and shot better, not to take anything away from them... It's not over yet. I still think Bears beat Salukis tomorrow, just gotta hope for the right results in Terre Haute
