Mast is having a nice year, and I think has really improved his down low presence this year, but I'm not sure which planet he's better than Gaige Prim on, but it ain't this one. Prim scores better, shoots better, rebounds better, defends better, and passes better. Mast can shoot the trey a lot better. You have to remember Prim was ill and his stats dropped for a couple games, and the offense now runs thru Mosley. But Prim's #'s are still at the top of the league for a post player. And I haven't seen any other post in the league get the consistent double as Prim does, he has people hanging on him from the minute he leaves the tunnel.

MVC Stat Leaders
Scoring - Prim 13th - 13.6 / Mast 10th - 15.1
Rebounding - Prim 1st - 8.4 / Mast 2nd - 8.3
FG% - Prim 5th - 57% / Mast - Not Ranked
Blocked Shots - Prim - Not Ranked / Mast 5th - 1.0

In the Bears one-point win in Peoria Prim had 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals and Reink Mast had 13 point, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and a block.

For what it's worth, stats in 8 MVC games:

Mast: 15.1 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 3 DBL DBLs
Prim 13.6 PPH, 8.4 RPG, 4 DBL DBLs

I'm not denying anything you said, but when you look at the numbers, there is absolutely an argument there for Mast if you want to make it.

Prim might be the better player, but Mast might be having the better season.

I don't think they only look at MVC games, but maybe I'm wrong.

Everyone does it differently. I've always looked at MVC stats only - takes out the randomness of nonconference scheduling. Everybody plays everybody else. The biggest nuetralizer.

To me a basketball year is a basketball year, if there was vast variance in schedules , maybe you consider picking isolated parts , but like in this case the Bear's noncon SOS was 159, Bradley's was 203.

That said :

Prim : 27.7 m/g, 13.8 ppg,8.2 rbs, .563 fg%, .768 ft%, .364 3pt%, 24 blks, 16 stls, 39 assists

Mast : 27.5 m/g , 11 ppg, 8.2 rbs, 47% fg%, .652 ft%, , 29.7 3pt%, 20blks, 13 stls, 25 assists

So really Prim having the better year in all the standard statistical measures. The big one to me for a post player is ya gotta shoot better than 50% fg, and better than 70% at the foul line or t's hard to run an offense thru you. For Mast though I'm sure part of his lower fg% is partly because of his low 3pt% and the fact he shoots a few of em.

I know many beat writers (Paul Oren the only one I can think specifically) say they only look at MVC games. That's what I look at but doesn't necessarily mean that's how everyone does it.

I am sure Prim would probably get the nod in the end. But I don't think the gulf between the two is as wide as many thought before the season started.

Mast's ability to shoot the three is a difference maker for him and Bradley.

Yeah, I like Mast, think he's moved ahead of Phyfe in any pecking order because of Phyfe's injuries and Mast development. He can do more than Brody , is more a true low post guy than Krikke [ who I really like alot also] and Chatman is a 4 as well. So yeah, other than Prim, I'd take Mast. I just witness how teams go after Prim with multiple players the minute he's on the court, because if you don't, he'll wear ya out in the lane all night both scoring and on the boards. We could still win games w/o Mosley; be a lot harder, but we have shooters, can't see us winning much w/o Prim. No matter what else happens with rosters, replacing him next year is the biggest concern. But Dana gets guys , maybe NJ Benson steps in as a frosh.

Mast started slow this year, only shooting 40% from FG (38-96) and 8-39 (21%) from the 3 prior to January.

In January, he's shooting 47-84 (56%) and 11-25 from the 3 (44%). If he can keep that going in February, he'll force himself into the 1st team conversation. A 6'9" 240 lb guy who can shoot the 3 and score at the basket is a guy I want to build my team around and gives you tons of options on offense.
