Considering that both of those teams were ranked most of the year and their games were being aired on TV none of this is a surprise. The old folks want to see their teams take on good competition and potentially knock of a top-rated foe, and the students want to be on TV and some just want to dress up like fools. When you have this knowledge and anticipate a strong crowd that is the best time to institute one of these "color" games. I'm not sure if smart athletic dept. marketing is evidence of a CU/WSU obsession by the rest of the league...

This could get interesting...

@Pg_Benson: ISU coach Dan Muller said he exchanged e-mails with MVC office Monday to get some clarification on Carmichael tech. Valley statement coming.

@Pg_Benson: It appears Tekele Cotton should have shot FTs instead of Early. Cotton shooting 58.6 percent at line, Early 80.9. Oh, boy ... #isuredbirds

I wondered why Early shot the free throws...

What about the two free throws Illinois State received after the blown flagrant foul that should have been called from the beginning?

You could read the lips of Muller asking ref, "is he the shooter?"

Wonder who for WSU tried to get away with that?

Interesting.....

Really a shame for ISUr that they still subsequently pissed away a 5 point lead AFTER the call with less than a minute to play.

Makes it a lot harder to say you got robbed when your point guard dribbles it off his ballsack in the clutch for the key turnover.

I wondered why Early shot the free throws...

My understanding of the flagrant foul rule is that anyone can shoot the free throws (just like a technical). In ths SIU-UNI game the flagrant foul was committed on Jake Koch but Anthony James shot the free throws in addition to ones he got for being fouled on the play as the flagrant was away from the play.

In defense of Janssen, it appears on the replay that there were two players (Cotton and Brown?) between him and Carmichael when Carmichael jumped so I think he believed that it was a balancing attempt by Jackie as he could not tell if there was any contact when Jackie went up (there was none, he didn't need to balance himself at all). There were also two players (Ekey and Early?) between the side official (David Hall)and Carmichael at the time of the jump to block the view as well. In that case, I believe they made the correct call in making no immediate call because, from what they could see, it was accidental.

That is why the use of replay in this situation is allowed, to go back and see what happened. That review comes with the next stoppage in play, which was after the foul was called. In making the ruling, since a flagrant awards free throws and the ball, ISU got to shoot the free throws they were awarded due to the original foul call, then WSU shoots free throws and gets the ball to resume play.

Also interesting that Jackie looks to throw an elbow to Hall's throat/head prior to taking off for the rebound. He's not looking at the basket at the time, either. Just not a smart all around play by Jackie at that point in the game.

As for Illinois State fans complaining that the refs handed WSU the game. I disagree. I do think that ISU got away with a hanging on the rim/taunting move early in the second half as well by Tyler Brown after a fast break alley-oop.

Hopefully the league office is able to sort through this and get sides calmed down. St. Louis is likely to be very interesting if these two teams meet again.

According to Todd Golden, Cotton was supposed to shoot the free throws and the MVC is going to release a statement about the game later today.

I've been checking the rules, and this is entirely correct. In the case of a flagrant foul, the player that was fouled shoots the free-throws unless they are injured and taken out of the game.

That said, I have no idea whether or not it was correct to allow Illinois State to shoot free-throws after the flagrant 1 call on the kick. By definition, that would be a live-ball foul, while play should have been stopped after the flagrant 1 call.

They have made the rule so complex that its confusing veteran officials. Its either a flagrant foul or its not. There aren't degrees of flagrancy. If you are worried about contact above the shoulders make it an administrative technical, its clearer and easier to enforce.

You guys had a good crew last night. Did as well as any crew could have been expected to do in the craziness of the situation. I'll take David Hall as my lead every day of the week and twice on Sundays...
