This was my thought at first glance....but Conference POTY and D2 All-American types are probably talented enough to score and defend in the MVC--especially if they're 22-23 year old seniors/grad transfers. I was the most pro-Lansing guy on SycamorePride and furious INSU blew up the program on purpose but I'm fine with JS dipping into D2 if they're top-level D2 players. The two he just got appear to be just that. The latest being one of the top non-D1 draft prospects according to one ESPN analyst.

Seems to be using his contacts and knowledge of D-2 to identify high level guys who want to move up. I look at his roster now and he has better functional size down low, and a contingent of interchangeable 6'4 -6'7 types on the perimeter. Could see the Sycs moving solidly into the MVC upper half this year.

I think his roster will struggle to defend at this level.

Just saw a ranking of the top ten transfer portal recruiting classes so far. Every team was from an FBS conference. Of the 17 players they have signed, 13 were from mid-majors and 4 were from FBS conferences. It is pretty obvious who the portal will hurt and who it will help.

I think the portal underrates guys that sat the bench at the P6 level though. Look at how well Brodie did for Drake immediately. I’d imagine that he was better than some of the mid major guys moving up, however not ranked in any list when transferring.

You'd need to include data on how many D-2 and LM players transferred up to MM programs to have any meaningful comparison. Moving up in level is one of the drivers of those entering the portal, so the natural progression would be for MM to go to P-5 , while MM should be gleaning the top of D-2 and LM. And my guess is LM and MM dominate where juco transfers go. And as pointed out, P-5's who transfer down are looking for pt,so they won't likely have great stats or be considered as high level a transfer as a MM who has been a starter and producer at that level. It's like recruiting in general, the P-5's will attract the top talent, nothing earth shattering there.

I know where you're trying to go with this example, but not sure Brodie is the best example to use. At his best, he's been an average MVC center. Most of this season, he was a far below average MVC center.

A better Drake example might be Brady Ellingson, who barely played at Iowa, and then was 2nd-team MVC for the Bulldogs.

To me the bigger issue in all of this is the extra COVID year. When teams know they can get an extra year for guys it makes them more likely to go after them.

Once the final COVID year guys are done we should see it settle some.

Both Demarcus Sharp and Ja'Monta Black follow former Associate HC Corey Gipson to play for him at Northwestern St. I like that, in that it'll be a huge help to Gip establishing himself in his first HC gig.
