How many programs in the country wouldn't play third fiddle behind Duke and UNC? Maybe one or two?

As for their entire history behind tied to Valvano, Herb Sendek did take them to 5 straight NCAA tournaments in the early 2000's.

I was simply implying that Creighton=NC State is inaccurate. I understand what you were trying to say agrinut, I didn't mean to spark an irrelevant debate

I'm not going to address to the rest of the post, but the bolded sentence there is total b.s. Ever heard of David Thompson? NC State was a national player before Valvano.

There's truth in what you say. But it's also true that NC state hasn't been an elite program for a long time.

As a bit of add-on/follow up to the TV contract talk, ESPN just released the slate of games for their annual Tip-Off Marathon. Even though the MVC has a contract with ESPN, there is not a single MVC team participating this year.

By contrast, the A10 has 4 teams participating.....

UNI participated in this by playing at St Marys and I believe you were one of the people that ripped Coach Jake for doing so.

SIU played in it before as well. I'm not really sure what that has to do with this year's lineup however.... I suspect there are quite a few conferences that participated last year that were invited to participate this year too.

I literally have nothing but my own cockamaime theories to toss around, but...

If you haven't been following, WAC had more defections and is down to one football school (New Mexico St) and 2 non-fb straddlers (Seattle, Denver). Those schools need a new conference, peroid.

Meanwhile, the Southland just added schizophrenic New Orleans and two DII programs. Oral Bob can't be happy.

I'd be shocked if Denver and NMSU haven't contacted Elgin already, and I wouldn't be surprised if Oral Bob did the same. I think all 3 programs are competent enough to provide value to the conference from a national profile standpoint.

Of course, there's the obvious risk of adding 2 of them, followed by Creighton and Wichita flying away in a few years to a MWC hybrid or A-10, and then having a geographic mess on your hands. But I'm not sure the geographic footprint we currently have is positive because we're going to be poached someday, not the poacher.

Denver and Seattle fit much better in the Big West or WCC eventually. Don't forget too that Illinois State has said publicly that we want to move up to FBS football in the coming years.

Big West isn't interested in either. They denied Boise for months and only accepted them after getting some of their FB money. They don't want non-Cali and Hawaii schools.

WCC has already publicly denied Seattle, and word on the street is that they denied Denver's application too.

Southland just went to 14 teams and is full. NMSU and Denver have no avenue there.

Mountain West went on public record and said they like their 8/9 setup.

Big Sky has a 10/14 setup at the moment. Can't add NMSU to go to 11 football teams, and do they want 15 or 16 members in all-sports? Nope.

Summit just discarded their western outposts and won't go further west than Nebraska.

Denver, Seattle, and NMSU are literally out of conferences to join.

I'm not in favor of adding teams just to add them, but Denver and especially NMSU are intriguing. Denver comes with a nice TV market that might help in negotiations. Would NMSU give up FB (or move down to whatever the MVFC level is)?

Oral Roberts is also intriguing, although I admit that I am concerned about their financial situation since they voluntarily moved away from the Summit to the Southland. It does put us back in Tulsa, which would be another nice TV market...
