Travel times (by bus):

Evansville to Omaha: 10 hours
Evansville to Wichita: 11 hours
Evansville to Colorado Springs: 16 hours

60% more misery to get to Colorado Springs. No thanks.

A charter flight from Evansville to Colorado Springs would be longer than the drive to Carbondale, Terre Haute and maybe even Bloomington or Normal.

The travel time, and cost, is a real issue.

This conference used to have schools like New Mexico St and UTEP as members. I'm not interested in AFA, but not because of travel. If longer roadies are going to be such an issue for Evansville, they should GTFO now. I don't want us to be passing up quality adds because somebody whines about a few more hours on a bus. Nobody has longer bus rides in our current conference setup than Creighton and Wichita, both of whom seem to be able to compete just fine. Maybe Evansville is just spoiled because it so close to so many schools right now?

Agreed. Drake's non-con football team plays in a conference with teams from Florida, North Carolina, New York, California, etc. That's some serious road trips, and we're talking travel parties of 70+ for football.

Any new member needs to bring an improvement to men's basketball in the conference, or bring in a huge TV market. Even the TV market thing can be misleading.....schools like Loyola and Detroit are in huge TV markets, but those teams are an afterthought in their areas.

P.S. UTEP has never been in the MVC.....I think you're thinking of West Texas State...not the same as Texas Western (previous name for UTEP).

Amen. Travel should not be a big concern. Improving the conference has to be. If we're only going to look for schools already within the current borders we're screwed as nobody there does anything for the conference. I know some love the thought of SLU, but they still don't offer a lot in my opinion.

And from last night:

Mueh confirms Air Force's Big East football interest, "strongly leaning" towards MVC for Olympic sports

Travel in itself is not a concern. If a story about Doug Elgin chatting with Georgetown's AD surfaced tomorrow, no one would mention travel. But AFA isn't Georgetown.

If travel wasn't a concern, why wouldn't AFA put all of their sports in the Big East?

Article seems to think going to the MVC is a done deal if AFA football goes to the Big East. We seem to be accomodating them while they bring nothing to the table. If they come, Elgin should go...

Especially considering it will be an 11 team conference. Thats what scares me, who else does Elgin have planned? I'm sure there is a D2 school ready to make the jump lurking somewhere.

D2 schools jumping to D1 in a conference go places like the Summit, not the Missouri Valley. If we add AFA, I'd like to think there is a plan for further expansion as well.
